Donald Soffer Obituary

Soffer, Donald Gene

December 13, 1931 - July 18, 2025

Donald Gene Soffer passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on July 18th, 2025. Born in East St. Louis to Augusta (Krupnick) and Sam Soffer, he began working at the age of twelve. His strong work ethic led to a long career in commercial real estate in the Metro East and St. Louis areas.

In 1952, he married Pearl Lipsitz, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage and endless devotion. He was predeceased by his wife, brothers, Harry and Louis, and his sister Helen. He is survived by his beloved children, Lois (Andy Kanefield) Soffer, Allen (Mary Beth) Soffer, Patte (Gary) Ackermann, and will be forever remembered as "Papa" by his grandchildren Perry Soffer-Kanefield, Parker Soffer-Kanefield; Dena (Simon Crocker) Soffer, Sarah Soffer, Elizabeth (Nick Beulick) Soffer, Donald (Callie) Soffer; Greg (Amy) Ackermann, Daniel Ackermann; and great-grandchildren Elyse Pearl Crocker and Will Crocker.

He leaves behind his devoted brother and sister-in-law, Jackie and Marty Lipsitz; his loyal friend, Mishaal Taqui; and his forever neighbor and treasured friend, Shirley Schermer. He is survived by his cherished and loving partner, Marilyn Levy.

Nothing brought him more pleasure than hosting large holiday gatherings and barbeques at his home for his extended family and friends from all chapters of his life. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, loyalty, mentorship, passionate belief in the value of education, and his legacy of family.

Mr. Soffer (Don) will always hold a special place in my heart. I loved being in his presence. If he teased you he loved you. His wit was sharp and he could deliver a hilarious one liner with a straight face. Don was kind to me and helped me when I was a young college student. I always felt welcome in his home. His devotion to family was remarkable and what a wonderful family it is. He loved and is loved. My thoughts and heart are with the family.

I’ve always enjoyed hearing the stories about your father. The funny things he said, the opinions he shared, your trips together to Costco. What a giant presence he must have been in your lives. I know your dad was a treasure. We send our deepest condolences to you and your family.
