Waldemer, Donald Edwin
passed away on August 16, 2021 at the age of 96. Adored husband of the late Jean W. Waldemer for 72 years. Beloved father to Mark Waldemer, Lucy (Ron) Ryan, Dean (Fran) Waldemer, Dan (Kathy) Waldemer, dear uncle to Richard (Dorothy) Whitehouse, beloved grandfather to James (Rachel) Waldemer, Sarah (Patrick) Arnold, Rachel (Will) Streyer, Ted Ryan, Max (Amy) Ryan, Jackie (Kara) Waldemer, Kate (Lucas) Sandheinrich, Grant (Meredith Emshoff) Waldemer, Lucy Waldemer, great-grandfather to Alex and Isaac Waldemer, Eamon and Cameron Arnold, Vivi and Francis Streyer, and Charlotte Ryan.
Son of Edwin and Eugenia Waldemer, brother to the late Mary Jane Kirtz, Don was born and raised in St. Louis. He graduated from Clayton High School in 1942. His studies at Washington University were interrupted by WWII. Don was the class of 1945 Kings Point Academy US Merchant Marines, rank Ensign and served in convoys crossing the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. Don returned to Washington University after the war where he studied business, wrote for The Eliot magazine, competed on the debate team and met the love of his life Jean.
Following graduation, they married and later settled in Brentwood, MO for a long and rewarding life raising their four children. Don worked at Union Electric for 34 years, traveled the world, and enjoyed cherished friends.
In retirement, Don wrote several books of poetry, histories of the Civil War, and an autobiography. He was young at heart, a voracious reader, writer, collector, and studier of life. He was an incredible father, grandfather, and great-grandfather with a robust laugh. His adventurous spirit lives on through us.
