Elizabeth Telthorst Obituary

Telthorst, Elizabeth Mulcahy October 31st, 1967 to February 16th, 2017 Elizabeth left us early Thursday morning after a hard-fought battle with breast cancer that lasted almost 14 years. A 1986 graduate of Parkway West High School, she went on to the University of Iowa, where she obtained a degree in journalism in 1990. Early in her career she founded a nonprofit organization called Challenges that provided a camping experience for children with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities. That experience inspired her to pursue graduate education in social work in the Brown School at Washington University. Elizabeth obtained her Master of Social Work degree in 1999 and was certified as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Her practice included working with children and youth born in St. Louis, MO and Boston, MA. She married Dr. Dean Telthorst on October 18, 2014. Elizabeth and Dean shared a great love of the outdoors and an interest in photography and motorcycling. She rode a Harley and was a licensed pilot. Elizabeth dedicated her life to helping others. She served in many capacities with both the American Youth Foundation and Kids4Peace, including as a member of both boards. She even transformed her cancer experience into service on the Patient and Family Advisory Council at Siteman Cancer Center and the Institutional Review Board at Washington University, where she received care. Her reach has been wide, and she left this world a better place than she found it. She will be greatly missed by scores of friends and a large and loving family. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Dean Telthorst; her mother Jo Ann Mulcahy; her father Pat Mulcahy (Midge), her sisters Susan Mulcahy and Molly Schwartz (Paul); her brother Andy Mulcahy (Molly), Mike Mulcahy (Lynn) and Chad Boldt (Laura); two stepsons Zach and Connor Telthorst; multiple nieces and nephews, and a dear friend to many. Services: The Funeral Service will be conducted at THE LUPTON CHAPEL, 7233 Delmar Blvd,, University City, on Monday, February 20, at 10:30 am. The family will receive friends at THE LUPTON CHAPEL, on Sunday, from 4 pm until 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Kids4Peace International, 110 Maryland Ave., NE, Suite 205, Washington, DC, 20002 or the American Youth Foundation, 6357 Clayton Rd., St. Louis, MO, 63117. Elizabeth had a zest for life and found a soul mate with Dean. We were so happy they had found each other and shared much joy and life in the time they had together. She is surely missed.

Elizabeth was one of those people who make you smile whenever you see them. I liked her immediately; she had a wonderful smile and was a lovely person. She made our friend, Dean, very happy. She is missed, but she is in Heaven with my Gil. Lots of great people up there!

I was recently searching for Elizabeth on Facebook and came across her obituary. I was so very sorry to hear of her passing. I came to know Elizabeth when she worked for me in Iowa City while she was in college, where she cared for adolescents with disabilities. She then came and worked for me again as the program director at Shady Oaks Camp for Cerebral Palsy, in Lockport, Illinois where she also convinced Jerry Lee to create a video about camp that for many years shared the story of Shady Oaks in recruiting staff and donors. It was a great and long lasting gift that she and Jerry gave to those of us associated with the camp. What a privilege and an honor it was to know and work with her. She was a beautiful soul and I'm sorry we lost touch over the years but not surprised to hear that she continued to give so much to those in need. RIP Elizabeth. My condolences to her family and friends.
