George Walsh Obituary

Walsh, George E. 1924 - 2010 Following a long, admirable career and more than 61 years of marriage to his true love, George Walsh entered into peace on Saturday, September 25, 2010. We will always remember him as the timeless gentleman he proved himself to be everyday of his life. George knew he found someone special when he spotted Angeline Gassino in the box office of the Kiel Opera House in early 1949. Their first date came on St. Patrick's Day, he proposed less than a month later and they were married in August of that same year. Together, they built a beautiful family that will carry forward their generosity and love. George worked in show business for years, but never felt the need to stand in the spotlight. Whether at The Muny, the Kiel, the American or the Fox, he was proud to lead the group of people working behind the scenes to make sure performances at theatres across St. Louis went off without a hitch. A career that lasted nearly 70 years will be remembered by the countless number of ticket sellers, stagehands, ushers and house staff whose lives George touched through his steady and trusting leadership. He loved the people he worked with, especially his Muny family, and treated every person he encountered with a caring respect. He was not a complicated man, but so many words could still be offered to describe his life. He was honest, dedicated, distinguished and his sharp wit made him a quiet comedian. We are thankful for his uncanny ability to look past our faults and focus on the good in each of us. Beyond all the adjectives, the easiest way to understand George Walsh would be to know that his family never once questioned his love and devotion. He was always working for us, cheering for us, and caring for us. And we will be forever grateful for all that he gave. George was a brother-in-law to Catherine and the late J. DeRigne and cousin to Ursula Rudolf. Father to Joe and Nancy Walsh, Margie and Ron Choquette, Steve and Gina Walsh, Larry Walsh, Angie Walsh, Tom and Theresa Walsh, Cathy and Will Whealen, and Kelly Walsh. Grandfather to Jenny and Tony Dattoli, Jeanne and Doug Davinroy, Mary and Tim Piasecki, Kevin Walsh, Mark Choquette, Patrick and Kelly Walsh, Danny Walsh, Meghan Walsh, Willie, Maggie and Ryan Whealen. Great-Grandfather to Craig, Loren, Joe, Sam, Gus, Max, Calvin, Anya, Ray, Abe and Sylvie. Uncle to Scott, David and Laura DeRigne. Honorary Grandfather to Christina Rodriguez and Meghan Ford. In lieu of flowers, gifts in George's memory can be offered to the charity of your choice. Services: A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 5 p.m. at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 6401 Wade Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri.

I was just a kid who watched this elegant man walk into the box office at the MUNY everyday. I would wish him a "good morning" and he would smile and exchange a greeting and then one day I followed him into the box office and sat down to have a conversation with him. That was the day I realized that I was part of the MUNY family. My prayers are with Angie, Larry and the entire family. Julie x

Show business in St. Louis and George Walsh are synonymous in my mind. It seems as though every box office I was at, there was George behind the counter. And always with a smile, a pleasant word, a gentle calmness. My father, Milton, used to bring corned beef and a deli platter to George and his crew at The Muny on Sunday mornings, and I know, from the way he spoke of George, that he treasured his friendship with him. My wife Mary Lee and I will miss him. The theaters will have one empty seat that can never be filled.
