Gregory Hampton Obituary

Hampton, Gregory Hugh passed peacefully surrounded by family, from this world to eternal life with God on March 13, 2012. Greg was a beloved son and brother, a proud father of one, and a close friend to many. Greg was born to Alice H. Price and Gifford H. Hampton Jr. (deceased) on January 22, 1947 in Hartford City, Indiana. He was the second of six lively, loud, and unfailingly loyal siblings including brothers Gifford (Patti), Joel (Melinda) and Steve (Young Ju); and sisters Michele (Ramon Stewart) and Debra (Don Thorne). Greg grew up a natural athlete, excelling in any sport he tried. He was an all-city basketball player for Williamsville High School near Buffalo, New York, once scoring 39 and 41 points in consecutive games. He also received a varsity letter in volleyball. Greg continued an active lifestyle as an adult, seeking powder snow along the tree lines on his snowboard for the past 25 years in Vail, Colorado. Greg graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1969. In the early 1970's he moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he founded Emperial Specialty Chemicals, a company that specializes in selling cleaning chemicals to coal mines across the Midwest. He made lifelong friends with many of his customers. After retiring in his early 40s, Greg traveled the world. During his travels, he met and made more lifelong friends. Greg was an expert at cultivating and maintaining loyal friendships. He sent hundreds of birthday cards each year, and never failed to call the day of a friend or family member's birthday. Greg also loved children. He enjoyed babysitting his many friends' children, teaching bible school classes for youth at his church, and coaching various baseball and basketball teams. One particular child changed Greg's life. In the early 1990's friends asked Greg to be the Godfather of a two-year-old boy named Kacey. Seven years later, Greg adopted Kacey and began a journey as a committed and involved father. Greg and Kacey also traveled the world together, always a surprise to Kacey to where they were going. Greg bought a motor home and made trips to Canada and several national parks. Greg instilled his love of baseball to Kacey and one summer they visited 12 major league ballparks across the country. Greg taught Kacey to snow ski from his snowboard - not an easy thing to do. One summer Greg took Kacey on an adventure to visit every house Greg ever lived in. This past October, Greg and Kacey got to go to a Cardinals world series game - a thrill for them both. Greg fought Acute Myeloid Leukemia for the greater part of the last year, undergoing various regimes of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. Despite his hard-fought battle, Greg's cancer proved too aggressive for current treatment options. Services: A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 17 at Grace Episcopal Church, 514 Argonne Drive, Kirkwood, Mo 63122. A reception will take place immediately following the service in the church reception hall. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, Greg's family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital or to Little Patriots Embraced (littlepatriotsembraced.org)

Kacey. Ive just seen this post of Gregs passing, in 2019 while looking for him on Google. Greg stayed with me and my family in Perth West Australia and my sister in NewZealand in the early 1980s. While we had the same surname we were not related but I always tbought we should have been! He was great fun and loved Australia and NZ. My sister and I with my partner white water river rafted in NZ on one visit with Greg, doing 74 rapids in 4 hours.
Im so sorry he passed away from the rezults of leukemia, very unfair or such a health conscious and fit bloke.
Please know he was never forgotten by my family although we eventually lost touch. Kind regards. Gilian Hampton. Gold Coast. Queensland. Australia.

I just learned of Greg's passing. I am so sorry for his family. He was such a large part of my life in Fort Wayne. There were so many fun times at Anthony Wayne School including the dances. We had such fun times also at Fort Wayne Country Club; swimming, dances & when I'd sneak to see you at the 1/2 way house while you worked.
You'll always be remembered for your good looks, fun loving nature & being a wonderful friend.

I just learned of Greg's passing. Greg used to be a salesman for the coal mine whete my father worked in Indiana. I grew to call Greg (Uncle Greg). I was just a little girl, but I remember him being a great force. I guess his job took him away from the Indiana area and over time I no longer saw him. He stood out to me so much that here I am 4 years after his death searching for him to reach out and say hello.....Hello Greg, rest in peace. I am so sorry you had to suffer. Gods Blessings to you and your son you left behind. I am sure he is a wonderful man.

Kacey, I'm just now in a place where I can write in this guest book of your father, my special friend. It's June 30th and I know most everything I can express to you has been said. But tonight as I was listening to some soft music, trying to sleep, a special song came on...and all I could think of was your dad and the memories just flowed along with tears. I just need to say something to Greg, Greg if you can hear me, I miss you! I love you! And your memory will always be with me. Especially when I sing "our" song. Thank you for the love and life you gave to us. And thank you for Kacey. Yes he is the young man you always hoped he would be!! You did really good!!! Rest now until we meet again.

I was shocked to hear of Greg's passing. I only knew Greg for a short time while he was in the hospital, but he was by far one of my all-time favorite patients, but beyond that, he was one of the coolest people I've ever met. He touched me and moved me to do things I have never done, or had not done in years. Kacey, let me tell you that I know what it is like to have lost a father. Greg passed away one day shy of my father's passing from cancer almost 6 months earlier. And Jesse lost his father last January. We just wanted to let you know that we are thinking of you, Kacey, and brother Joel, and your family, with deepest empathy at this time. We know that Greg is watching down on you from above with both of our dads as well.

When we leave this life, the caring and friendship which we have extended during our lives will be one of the few legacies that are left. Greg was a family member to my brother Douglas Watanabe, his wife, and children. The positive and loyal friendship he gave to them is a value beyond accounting.
Thanks Greg for taking care of my brother and his family.

I only had the pleasure of knowing Greg for just a few short months, but the courage, wisdom and love he showed will be with me for a life time. Greg was such a gifted and inspirational person and a very proud and loving dad. His eyes would always just beam with pride whenever he spoke about Kacey, and that was quite often. Greg you will be truly missed.

Kacey,

My prayers are with you and your family. Be comforted in knowing that your father was a faithful servant in whom God is well-pleased.

I do not know this Man but what a great person he must have been! I am sorry Kacey, that you have suffered his loss, but be assured, he is sitting next to the right hand of God, Our Father looking down upon you and his other loved ones. He will be forever your Guardian Angel as he seemed to be in life.
