Gregory Powers Obituary

Powers, Sr., Gregory Brabant

left this world too soon on May 24, 2024, at the age of 74 after a short but valiant battle with Cholangiocarcinoma. He was preceded in death by his beautiful son, Joseph Pierce Powers. He was the loving husband of Patricia Purcell Powers, the treasured father of his surviving children, Greg, Jr., Margaret, and Kathleen, and the adored "Buddy" of grandchildren Auggie and Emerson Powers. He is also survived by siblings Pierce, David, Marc, Manette, Christopher, and Dorothy.

Greg grew up in Clayton, MO, and attended Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Louis University High School, and Clayton High School. He was a graduate of St. Louis University. He spent his career as an Insurance Broker, first with the Charles L. Crane Agency, and later with MGI Risk Advisors.

Greg was a founder of the St. Anselm Athletic Association and enjoyed both coaching and refereeing soccer. He was a member of the Parkway School Board from 2005-2008. Greg served as President of the Tennessee Society of St. Louis in 1991.

He was an avid boater who loved nothing more than spending the day with his family cruising on the Mississippi. Greg was proud of his position as the unofficial Mayor of Sunnybrook subdivision.

Services: A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 1, at St. Anselm Catholic Church (Priory). Visitation will be from 10-11 at the church, with the Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, the family would gratefully appreciate donations to Friends of Kids with Cancer in Greg's memory, honoring his brave grandson, Auggie. Rest in peace, our sweet Bon Vivant.

It's hard to believe a year has passed. Every time I watch officials walk onto the pitch to work a soccer match, I see Greg Powers there. I often have an urge to go down at half time or when the match is over and ask them if they knew Greg. I'm certain many would say yes and laud him. In my prayers still. Joe Hurley

To the Powers family:
I am so sorry for your loss Greg was such an icon at the St Anselm Athletic Association. He helped us continue the Association when Cathy Troupe and I were in charge and were completely clueless as to what we were doing. He always had an encouraging word and would jump in and referee any game when we were short handed. I remember how much he loved coaching, reffing and mentoring the kids, their parents/grandparents and even the two moms who tried following in his footsteps. He was always so proud of all of you and worked hard to make his community better, which he did with patience and persistence. I will certainly remember him when passing the soccer fields at SAAA and pray your memories and faith are of great consolation

Dear Patty, Greg Jr., Margaret and KK, what a blessing it has been to be your next door neighbors for over 25 years. Greg was always lending a hand whenever we needed help with something in the house, in the yard or with any of the cars. It was endearing that he always called me Aunt Sue. Greg always praised his family and was a proud father and grandfather. He was courageous and was a wonderful example of how to live his life in spite of the challenges. We will miss seeing him but he will always live in our hearts. God bless your family.

With love,
Sue and Tina

I was fortunate to know Greg for the last six years as we roamed the pitch of high school soccer fields across the St. Louis area. He played a role in leading me to grab a whistle and cleats to officiate these matches. I once witnessed him at Westminster at a Spring match while I was officiating another sport at an adjacent field. We worked games the last six years and I always looked forward to just spending time talking with him prior to and at halftime of games. It seems pretty selfish to have wished for more time to spend with him. I think I'll just treasure the moments we spent, grateful to God that we crossed paths.

Patty, and all the Powers kids. I am beyond comforting words with your loss. I remember Greg's jovial personality, always a greeting with a boisterous "Hello!" I'd see him everywhere- at school or around town. He was a real personality. I can only offer my deepest sympathies, sending healing thoughts to all of you. No doubt you have multitudes of memories to look back upon. My love, Claire
