Hacking, Jr., James Oliver
80, passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021, fortified with the Sacraments of the Holy Mother Church. He is preceded in death by his father James O. Hacking, his mother Thelma (McAllister) Parrish, and his sisters Mary Lou (Pete) Sperruzza, Patricia (Wayne) Schneider and Donna (William) Mohart. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary (Malone) Hacking; his son James and daughter-in-law Amany Hacking; his daughter Kerry and her partner David Schaeg; and, his daughter Molly and son-in-law Peter Gray. Papa leaves behind six beloved grandchildren: Ismail Hacking, Yusuf Hacking, Ibrahim Hacking, Abby Gray, Kate Gray and Noor Hacking. Jim was a beloved papa, father, husband, uncle and friend.
Jim grew up in South St. Louis. After his father died, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17. After his service ended, he returned to St. Louis and worked for the St. Louis Police Department. Jim obtained his GED and began working on survey crews. He eventually began working at Warren Van Praag & Company as a surveyor. While at WVP, he began to work in the marketing department and helped the company grow. In 1989, he helped form David Mason & Associates, a pre-eminent architectural and engineering firm, in the City of St. Louis, with later offices around the country. Jim worked there until he retired in 2018.
Jim loved his wife, children and grandchildren with his entire being. Jim also embodied the motto of the U.S.M.C., Semper Fidelis, always faithful. While a member of the Little Flower Parish, he served as President of the Men's Club, sang in the guitar choir and renovated the school offices. Jim treated everyone with tremendous respect and always generously helped anyone who needed assistance. Jim was a devoted and trusted friend. Jim loved playing golf, a good game of poker and spending time with his family. He was the best role model for his family and he always did the right thing. Jim was loyal, funny, kind and lived a very full life. The night before he died, he was surrounded by those who loved him and he was excited to get to heaven. James Oliver Hacking, Jr., will be deeply, deeply missed. Godspeed, Papa.

Dear Cissy,
We are sorry that we didn't get to talk to you at Jim's funeral Mass. You and Jim and your family are in our prayers. Jim was a source of joy and laughter whenever we were in his company, and like all of his many friends we are saddened by his departure. May he rest in peace.
It was good to see all the Hackings at LF. Please congratulate young Jim on the outstanding eulogy he gave for his Dad.

Jim was a friend and a fellow golfer, but mostly a good friend to both me and my family. As we grew to know Jim and Cissy, we found while there was a difference in age, our lives were not to dissimilar. In fact at a Hacking xmas dinner, we determined that my wife had lived in the same apartment in the Little Flower Parish that Jim and Cissy had lived in years before. Whether it be at Boone Valley or Old Memorial, the banter with Jim on the golf course was always enjoyable. Jim will always have a special place in out hearts and the memory of Jim will resonate with us as did his voice in song at our wedding.

Jim & Hacking Family: I never met your father, but I can tell how wonderful he must have been just by knowing you. We reflect the best parts of our parents thanks to the loving way they raised us. Take comfort in your memories as you grieve.

I remember Jim referring to himself as a bull in a china shop. I will forever remember him as a big teddy bear. Underneath his hard exterior and sternness was a kind and compassionate soul. I enjoyed working for him as he kept me challenged and was always straight with me. When he hired me, he gave me the opportunity to spend time with my father before he passed away. I am in his debt and only hope that he has peace now. Godspeed, Jim!

Jim meant the world to my sister, his beloved, Cissy and he loved her with his whole being. This was always apparent is his words to and about her and in his actions surrounding her with his love and devotion daily. I can hear them both laughing at some wry comment from Jim and he could be so tickled by anything Cissy said in response. I shall miss his laugh and know that Cissy will miss him always. One of a kind. Truly

Mr. Hacking, I thank you for your beautiful, amazing, meaningful life — and especially for giving the world your daughter Molly, my friend, who clearly shares your outstanding character. Your light remains very bright in her, that’s for sure. I wrap all of the Hackings and Grays in love.
