James Hanselman Obituary

Hanselman, James Edward II

April 2, 1943 - July 2, 2025

James E. Hanselman II passed away on July 2, 2025, at the age of 82. A resident of University City, he loved his home of 52 years. James graduated from the University of Illinois and was a rabid fan of their athletic programs. Most of his attire was Illini wear. He was an avid outdoorsman, paddling whitewater (before its rise in popularity) and taking his family on countless canoe and camping trips. His love of fishing and birdwatching was contagious, and he passed his love of all things natural on to his family, including his two grandchildren, Katherine and James IV.

He was married to his wonderful wife, Charlotte, for 57 years. In his professional life, James II was the editor of the Features Section for most of his 30+ years at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

He is survived by his two sisters, Leanne and Marilyn and two sons, Jim and Jake. James is preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte and his brother, Donald.

A private ceremony will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the Audobon Society.

Condolences to Jim´s family. Knew Jim from our many years at the PD. Always, always so nice. Seeing his obituary brought back memories of sharing a few drinks at the Tropicana with Jim, Commish, Joe, Don and others from news. Thanks Jim for your friendship.
RIP John Young.
