Jason Morrow Obituary

Morrow, Jason D. July 8, 2008 His family, the Vanderbilt and St. Louis communities, and the international scientific establishment, lost a brilliant and dedicated man when Dr. Jason D. Morrow, physician and scientist, died suddenly Tuesday, July 8, 2008. He was Chief of Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt, the oldest and largest program of its kind in the world. In 1990, Dr. Morrow and a colleague discovered substances which became the most exact measure of how cells 'rust', a damaging process that may contribute to heart disease and cancer. As the leading expert in his field, Dr. Morrow was in demand to make lectures in dozens of countries, from England to Singapore to India. He never failed to bring back souvenirs for his colleagues; his lab had among the highest morale ratings at Vanderbilt University. He got his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt, and went to medical school at Washington University in his hometown of St. Louis, MO. He returned to Vanderbilt as an intern, followed by a Howard Hughes Fellowship, before joining the Vanderbilt faculty in 1994. Dr. Morrow was so determined and fearless as he began his research, that he sometimes injected himself with certain chemicals to measure their effects. Even as his reputation and responsibility as a researcher grew, he spent a month every year in the hospital treating patients. As dedicated as he was to his career, Dr. Morrow's family was his highest priority. He leaves behind his wife, Lisa Morrow; his children, Jeremy and Stephanie; his mother, Vera Morrow and his sister, Leslie Shalloway. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Morrow, former Provost at Washington University in St. Louis. Contributions may be made to the Jason D. Morrow Memorial Fund at Vanderbilt online at www.vanderbilthealth.com/giving/ or mailed to the Jason D. Morrow Memorial Fund, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Gift Processing Office, VU-Station B #357727, 2301 Vanderbilt Place, Nashville, TN 37235-7727.

To the Morrow Family:
I am shocked and saddened to learn of Jason's passing. During my tenure at the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Jason chaired a Task Force on Dietary Supplement Safety that I staffed. It was a distinct honor and pleasure to work with Jason. I will always remember his inquiries about my vegetable garden and my son that preceeded the "business at hand". My thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.

This is really sad news. We miss you Dr. Morrow - a great scientist, gentleman, and a helping friend. I still vividly remember our conversations at the AOCS meeting and also our scientific discussions. I adore your helping nature and you promised to help me with my research. A kind and gentle person Dr. Morrow was - a real human among scientists.
The Lipid Field misses you. This is a great loss.
May Dr. Morrow's soul rest in peace.

We really miss Dr. Morrow. He meant so much for our careers. When we arrived at Vanderbilt he was one of the first persons that really made us feeling welcomed. He guided us through the difficulties of establishing ourselves as independent physician-scientists. His door was always open and he was always available for suggestions from grant writing to career choices. He was generous, always smiling and he had a very special way to give the right advice. We will always carry his memory with us and he will continue to inspire us as we mentor the generations to come of physician-scientists.

Lisa, Jeremy, and Stephanie,
I can't begin to express my deepest condolences for your loss. Jason truely was a wonderful boss and person, I never dreamed I would have to work for anyone else. After working for him for nine years, I can say he will be truly missed, for his guidance, compassion, and wisdom. We will carry on with the Morrow lab and his vision, so that he may live on in this scientific community forever.

Our family was very saddened to learn about the untimely death of Jason. He and his wife and kids used to live across the street from us in Nashville and they (and extended family) were very gracious to us in times of need when our younger daughter required multiple trips to St Louis for surgery. We will remember him with great fondness and always wish the best for Lisa, Stephanie and Jeremy and other family members.

Dear Lisa, Jeremy, & Stephanie,
I will always remember those great barbecues with Jason happily manning the grill and calling me 'Aunt Rachelle', while our kids played in the backyard. Although Jason was a renowned researcher and physician, he was always gracious, down to earth, and genuinely interested in my work challenges. Lydia & I pray that God will grant you peace & healing in the memories of good times shared together.

I had the fortunate privilege to know Jason during my fellowship in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt. He was warm-hearted, thoughtful and genuinely concerned about the well-being of everyone in his Division. His door was always open, and he put in that extra effort to create a pleasant atmosphere. My sincerest thoughts are with his family and loved ones. He will be dearly missed.

Dear Lisa, Jeremy and Stephanie:

I am writing this letter with deep grief for the sudden loss of Jason, a friend and more like a mentor to me. In 2002, I contacted Jason by email for learning the technique of isoprostanes analysis that he has discovered. He welcomed me with his
heart even though he did not know me before and I am just a junior faculty. I could not forget that he invited me to your house for his birthday, so I could have met with
you and experienced your hospitality. Later on, he let his lab members help me to analyze my samples and establish those important techniques in Taiwan, which have been so important for my career here.

To me, Jason is an unusually generous and nice person that cares young scientists very much even though he is already a world-famous professor. Isoprostanes-related
work was like a mission impossible for me, but I could have made some progresses in Taiwan because of his continuous encouragement and full support. All the interactions and memories with Jason from the beginning were just like a legend to
me.

It is impossible for me to go to the funeral service from Taiwan, but I wish to use this letter to express my sincere condolence to you and wish to say good-bye to Jason
for the last time. I wish to thank him for his kindness, guidance, and encouragement for the last 6 years. I also would like to express my appreciation for your previous
warm hospitality again. You will be proud that Jason has made such great impact to many people in addition to me and he will always be in our hearts.

Best wishes to you

Dr. Morrow,

You have been the best boss and mentor for which I could have ever hoped. Being a member of your lab for almost 4 years, I am blessed to say I am a part of a group of people who function as a family; we will band together in your honor and remain the "Morrow Lab". Your professional and personal leadership has made us better people. God bless you and your family.

It has been a great honor to work with Jason Morrow and with some of the excellent physicians he has trained. One little thing I'll always remember is him coming up to me at Harris Teeter on 21st & Blair two weeks ago with a smile and a kind word about something we did to help his Division. That was after he had already sent a note of thanks. We will all miss him greatly but will remember him forever.

Dear Lisa, Jeremy and Stephanie, I am so very sad for your loss. My memories of all of you from the early days at the Child Care Center were happy ones and Jason kept me posted on your achievements when I ran into him at the Medical Center. I remember how happy he was everyday when he came and hung out with Jeremy in our infant room. I am praying for your family. Very Sincerely, Anne Spooner

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to all of you. I left Vanderbilt a year ago after 7 happy years there. Some of my fondest memories of my time at Vanderbilt were catching up with Jason, we shared a hallway and ran into each other (literally) quite often. We both shared a love of running, science and the Vanderbilt community. Jason was a very kind person, a brilliant scientist, and loved his family very much.

You are all being thought of in this difficult time.

Jason was steadfast in his support when I transitioned from a Pediatric ID fellow to junior faculty. He told me and showed me that it was still possible in the current environment to succeed as a physician scientist. Jason was part of awarding me the VPSD award, my first faculty grant. Whenever I saw Jason (usually jogging) he had a warm smile and some words of encouragement. My heartfelt condolences go to his family and loved ones. We will miss him.

I only met Jason a few months ago, when I was sent to reorganize his files in his office. What struck me most about him was his kindness to me and his staff. They really did like there boss, and he allowed his staff to call him Jason. Odd for a man of his status. He told me a title doesn't make you who you are your name does. I really admired him.

Chief,

There will be no other who will hold this title in my eyes. You were the consummate professional and mentor through thick and thin. I hope to be just as good to my fellows and residents.

I will also never forget the pride you had as a Father. The pride in your son's performance in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade was something I will never forget. I hope to emmulate that with a son of my own someday.

The lessons in academia, but more importanly the life lessons you taught by example were the most valuable I have ever learned. We have truly lost a great gentleman.

I knew Dr. Morrow when I worked on 8 North. I always found him to be kind and helpful to his patients and a true gentleman with the new doctors learning under his tutelage and the nursing staff who cared for his patients.
