John was a very dear friend. We had a lot of laughs together and he was partly responsible for my husband and I getting together. We traveled a lot and always told my husband make sure you have enough money to bail us out if we need it. He will be sorely missed, but his memory will live on forever.

When I was 17, my parents asked me leave our home. I met John at the grocery store on Chippewa/Grand after he had dropped his house keys and I helped him locate them on the floor. He and I talked. I explained my situation, and he offered me free housing in his rooming house while I finished high school and 2 years in community college. John's generosity allowed me to finish my bachelor's degree, which eventually led to a career in teaching math at a junior college in Kansas. John and I exchanged phone calls and Christmas cards for years until he moved and we lost contact. I'll always remember John first as an honorable person, very generous, and always ready for a good laugh and to imbibe in a glass of bourbon or scotch--or two.
