Alegre, Jorge Maximo
On September 5, 2023. Jorge Maximo Alegre Benavides of Chesterfield, MO entered his eternal rest at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife, Perla and son Jorge (Rachel).
Jorge served as a Reserve Commissioned Officer in the Army of the United States from December 18, 1970 and was honorably discharged March 9, 1977. Upon completing his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Mayor De San Marcos De Lima, Peru, he accepted a seat at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital program in St. Louis. He courted Perla long distance and were married in 1967. He completed his Residency (Internal Medicine) and Fellowship (Cardiology) at St. Luke's Hospital, accepting an appointment in December 1970. His passion was his love of medicine, and his inherent nature to always help others. Jorge was warmhearted, true in his faith, work, compassion, kindness and generosity. He was by all counts a genuine soul and giving person. He will be dearly missed by those of us lucky enough to call him friend, Doctor or both.

Dr. Alegre was the most compassionate, and caring spirit. He was my father´s doctor, my Mom´s and finally me. We shared so many wonderful moments through the years my heart aches for his wonderful wife and son who he loved so deeply. My appointments were always a pleasure. I loved hearing Dr. Alegre share the pride he felt for my parents who stood as sponsors for his citizenship. Dr. Alegre would remind me he kept their gift, a silver inscribed cup on the mantel where it held the wind key for his clock and each week he would visit the cup and the memory of their friendship. Dr. Alegre was my inspiration to stay healthy we ended nearly every appointment with him reminding me in his most gentle tone..."you know Rebecca it´s all about staying active and what you put in your mouth."
One of the most memorable moments for me was a personal phone call from Dr.Alegre asking how he could get tickets to be in the audience of the CBS program The Price is Right? Jorge Jr loved the show and they were going on vacation and would like to attend. As a Producer, Writer for CBS I was able to get tickets and if memory serves me...a year supply of Kraft Mac and Cheese was shipped home. The memories are wonderful the loss is tremendously difficult my prayers are for strength and peace for the family. Dr. Alegre´s footprint will live on in many. I am grateful to have known his compassionate soul. Rebecca Dennis Amelung

Dear Alegre family. I am so sorry for your loss. He had been my doctor for about the last 15 years and was the most gentle and kind person. Always willing to give you whatever time you needed and always asked about the family. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. May God bless you all.

Dr. Alegre was my parents´, my husband´s, and my doctor. He treated us with such kindness like few other doctors. One time, my mother, at the time, in her 80´s needed a blood transfusion to live. On her living will, she said she wanted none. Dr. Alegre shouted, "Virginia-do you want to live? You must have a transfusion!" She shook her head "yes" and lived until almost 95. My husband recalled," I never saw a doctor kiss a patient on the forehead." He was so kind to her. She never wanted to go to doctors-but Dr. Alegre treated her through heart attacks, diabetes, and at 90 and 92, 2 strokes from which she came back 95 percent, able to walk and talk normally. I know part of it was answered prayers he said in that chapel. At 76, my husband and I have to find a new doctor. A doctor like Dr. Alegre will be almost impossible to find. God´s blessing to his family.

Dr Alegre was my parent's doctor and mine for over 50 years. He was one of the most jovial people I've ever met. What a great doctor and person. Imagine a doctor that would type a letter (not an email) to you as a follow-up. He was one of a kind. Great loss to the medical community. Wishing his family the best.

Dear Alegre Family, we are so very sorry for the loss of your husband and father. He was my husbands' primary care doctor for nearly 50 years, mine for several. He was one of the kindest people I have ever met and really had a great sense of humor too. You would have to know my husband but on one occasion Jorge told him that it was called getting "O-L-D-E-R"! I couldn't stop laughing! God bless him, he was not only our doctor but a friend. I'm glad I kept my last typed report from my annual physical he sent me. I mean who does THAT anymore? Heaven has a new angel, and he is home now.

We were privileged to have Dr. Alegre as our physician. The kindest and caring doctor ever. I used to tell him that, when he retires, St. Luke´s Hospital should have him give seminars to their doctors exclusively on how to handle patient like he did: professionally, caring, and making one feel like he had no other patient besides you. Dr Alegre will be remembered by us forever. He´s a very special person in Heaven.

Dr. Alegre became a household name once my father had met him and sold him a car decades ago. Our dad, Harry Seltzer, had so much respect for this wonderful cardiologist, I imagine it was at our dad's insistence that Dr. Alegre became the primary physician for both our dad and mom. Our parents trusted him, literally with their lives, and my siblings and I knew his name and reputation well. We all have such warm and loving feelings for this man. His care, his wonderful sense of humor, and responsiveness to each of us as our parents aged, will live on with us. We were so heartbroken to learn he had passed away. He was a man who truly used his life to help others, and he will not be forgotten.

Dr Alegre always smiled and said Hi when you passed him in the hall, any hall, every hall of St Luke´s Hospital, any time of day or evening. He always went to the Chapel before he saw patients in the hospital. One of the most caring and compassionate physicians ever. Heaven has welcomed a special angel.
