At 19 I stupidly wrecked my parents' car and spent weeks in the hospital. Paul Bruegger called my mother every day to check on me; she told me he was the best friend I'd ever have, and for once she was right.
Paul put off dating while he was caring for his father, a disabled architect. He found his right match in the Tiptoppers; I was working out of town and missed the wedding but met his bride during my next visit home. Judy was very young and somewhat shy but entertained me playing her guitar, which she soon exchanged for baby things. I was lucky to enjoy her friendship for many years, and she left me a lovely memento in her family.
