Kirk Richter Obituary

Richter, Kirk A.

August 28, 1946 - January 14, 2022.

Kirk was a beloved spouse, father, grandfather, brother, son, friend, and community member. Kirk died at home surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest and caring for the communities in which they live.

Kirk was a native St. Louisan and graduated with a degree from the University of Missouri - St. Louis in 1968. He spent most of his career at Sigma Aldrich, where he served as Controller, Vice President/Treasurer, and Chief Financial Officer. He spent his ten years of retirement as a dedicated volunteer and fundraiser. He was a man of great faith and a humble but generous supporter for causes that had a special place in his heart, including the Boy Scouts of America, Mercy Hospital St. Louis, St. John UCC Manchester and the University of Missouri - St. Louis. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Maureen, attending Cardinals games with friends and family, and treasured special moments with family, friends, and grandchildren.

He passed from this life on January 14, 2022 and was welcomed home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Richter, and first wife, Kathleen Richter. He is survived by his wife Maureen Richter (nee Kelley/Peterson), children Laura and Daniel (Kelsey) Richter; Stephen (Renae), Christopher (Annette), Daniel (Chiara), and Jonathan (Hannah) Peterson, and 16 grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He is also beloved by his mother Jane Richter, brother Kent (Debbie) Richter, and extended family.

Services: are limited to immediate family due to ongoing concerns with COVID-19. The family will host a larger celebration of life when it is safe to do so. My condolences to Maureen and the family. This is a very big shock. I met Kirk at UMSL, graduating in January 1968. Kirk was a very likable and kind person and we spent time taking about accounting. I always knew he was smarter than I was, and I knew he would be successful. I enjoyed our talks. While we went our separate ways we did reconnect later in life going to lunch and when he invited me to go to an UMSL Founders Dinner. It was at this meeting that I connected with former professors and classmates. I was surprised when he remembered after 50 years that I had a twin brother. I know he was very active in the UMSL Alumni Association. I was looking forward to future get togethers with Kirk. Kirk was a very dear friend and classmate.

Kirk was one of the kindest people I ever had the pleasure and privilege to work with. He and I traveled to the UK, Switzerland and across the US as he was mentoring me in the art of investor relations. We have lost one of a great person. I hope the families' memories and Kirk's legacy of service with provide comfort as you find a path forward.

It was a privilege to serve alongside Kirk on the UMSL College of Business Alumni Chapter Board over the past 15+ years. His knowledge and guidance helped us progress through the years and he was always there to lend a helping hand. Whether it be a volunteer opportunity at Little Creek Nature Area removing honeysuckle (no small feat) or attending an event, he was always there. Kirk was UMSL and embodied what is best about St. Louis. Condolences to Maureen and family.

Maureen, though I met you and Kirk only once at a special UMSL Founders' event, two things were quickly obvious in that conversation-your love and dedication to each other and the love for-and dedication to-UMSL. I feel so fortunate to have seen that in you both. Kirk's generosity to UMSL has been, and will be so meaningful to students. My deepest sympathy to you in this loss and know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers as you walk this path. Lela-Eunice Taussig

We lost one of the good ones yesterday with Kirk’s passing. He was a stoic and unflappable individual yet he had the kindest heart and most gentle spirit. The only time I saw his eyes really light up was when he was talking about his family or his beloved Cardinals. I have many fond memories of Kirk having shared a common glass wall with his office at Sigma-Aldrich for many years. He was a man of integrity and always knew the next right thing to do as a business man, family man and friend.

Kirk was a legend at Sigma Aldrich and his contributions made such a lasting impact on the company and the thousands of our associates. I loved traveling with him and saw first hand how much respect he garnered from our investment community. He was a true professional and a great family man. He will be missed terribly but his spirit will live on. RIP my friend. Rakesh Sachdev

Condolences to the Richter family. It was a joy and a privilege to work with Kirk. He was a wonderful colleague. Most impressive, however, was the joy in and evident love for his family, followed closely only by the Cardinals!

Remembering many shared moments and happy memories. RIP Kirk. Those of us lucky enough to call you friend have a hole in our hearts today. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Maureen, Laura, Dan and the rest of your family.

Kirk was one of the most well-respected healthcare executives with Wall Street investors and a fantastic ambassador of Sigma-Aldrich. A consummate professional, Kirk affected people across the US and the world with his deep knowledge, positive energy and gentle humor. And as great as Kirk was in business, he was an even greater friend, philanthropist and family man. He loved talking about his kids and grandkids, recapping his last vacation with Maureen and planning the next one, working on the next big project at his alma mater, and, of course, plans for another Cardinals spring training trip. Connie and I extend to the family our deepest condolences on his passing and our gratitude on the blessing of having Kirk as a mentor, colleague and friend.

Kirk was a once-in-a-lifetime genuine person who gave lovingly of his time and energy to so many. The University of Missouri-St. Louis family is so greatly appreciative of his continued engagement, support, care, and concern for the past 50 years. He will be missed by our entire Triton community. Many hugs and wishes to Maureen, Dan, Laura, and the entire Richter family.

Ilene and I are truly saddened by Kirk’s passing. We enjoyed our dinners together at places about town when we were able to go about town. I will always remember his accompaniments when I was singing solos at church.
