My condolences
I happened to catch Mark sing with Queens of the Stone Age at an in store mini concert for release of Lullabies to Paralyze on a Monday in March 2005. I was hooked. Later that week I bought Bubblegum, eventually (2 at a time) all his solo albums & Screaming trees albums. Letting each pair sink in before buying the next...

I´ve seen him sing with Soulsavers, Gutter Twins, Isobel Campbell, Mark Lanegan Band... etc.

I read Sing Backwards and Weep in a day and a half, the day it was released...

I am very sorry he´s gone but am very appreciative for all the music and work (art) he gave us. His music has been my buddy and in regular rotation in my foreground & background over the years. If you take his music away, I don´t think there´s anything else that would take it´s place (that is to say it´s distinct, a unique take on things. Not trite like so much other music...)

I was just on a road trip to Pittsburgh and listened to the book on audio while driving, hence down a Lanegan rabbit hole, looking up some things, facts, references and found this obituary...

Again, my sincere condolences. And, as I said to Mark more than once at his post show meet and greets: thank you for the music. I wish I could tell him again in person, I´ll tell it to the air

Keeps on raining
There´s no explaining
Sing backwards and weep.

Yours is a wonder,
All my life I listened to voices sing
But yours got through to my soul

Sat with me in places
Too dark
For most travellers

Thank you dear Mark Lanegan
For all that you shared
Even today I returned home, again, with a copy of your book in my hands,
you are a distant companion

Your name - an anagram of 'An angel'
You have been that,
to so many.

You are missed and loved.

You and Layne were the voices that I needed in my youth when I didn't have the words to speak. My life was a lot like yours, and your courage, strength, and music have helped me through many of life's darkest moments. I'll always listen to your lyrics and music and will continue to share those with other people. Rest easy, you lived enough for two lifetimes, thank you for being who you were.

My heartfelt condolences are offered to the family, many, many friends, colleagues and devoted army fans of Mark Lanegan. Mark Lanegan was a singer-songwriter best known as the lead singer for the pioneering psychedelic grunge band Screaming Trees. He was greatly admired by his fellow artists and all those who knew him. May the love and many, many special memories you shared with your devoted loved one show how much your life was touched by him. May the God of comfort bless your grieving hearts with strength, loving kindness and peace as the world copes with the loss of Mark Lanegan. May his love of music and legacy keep his memory alive forever.

I was blessed to hear Mark sing live with QOTSA in 2003, and it was the greatest live performance I've ever heard. When Mark opened his mouth and sang, his voice nailed you to the wall with its incomparable power. The world has lost a great treasure. May you finally find peace, Mark, and thank you for sharing your beautiful, earth shattering talents with us mere mortals.

This is such a beautiful obituary. I loved and took solace in his music for more than 30 years. The outpouring of grief and gratitude from his family, friends, fellow musicians/writers, and fans is a testament to the impact he made as an artist and human being. His prolific and singular voice will live forever. I am so sorry for your loss and will miss him for the rest of my life. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2021, he took the time to send me a video message of support and goodwill after my brother contacted him via Twitter. He did not need to do that for a perfect stranger but that's the kind of good hearted and real person he was. It helped me so much. Wishing you the same comfort.

It's been weeks and I still can't find the words. My most sincere, and deepest condolences to Shelley, his close friends and family. Like so many others, I found comfort, happiness, and a wealth of emotions in listening to his voice singing words that had such meaning. I dedicated a large segment of my life trying to help the world find him and his music, and the best times in my life were spent standing at his feet, surrounded by friends, while he sang the stories of my life from the stage. I love you Mark, and will miss you forever.

Your darkest, best music is that forever rain on a cool Portland, Seattle, Bellingham, Friday Harbor day. The pouring rain only us northwestern folks know, whether we hear it coming down on our window in some broken down old pin in a map town, or on the tin roof of some Seattle city limits, fixed income apartment fourplex. Rain you hope never stops if not for any reason other than it makes you feel like whoever is behind the curtain really has something heavy on their mind.

Music for the working poor, grinding out our lives how we do. For the broken and damaged, for the forgotten and the addicted. Music for the empty and heavy hearted, the abused and the underpaid. Music for anyone who has ever had the indescribable feeling that they hope it's not all for nothing.

Already miss ya, Mark. Never knew you, but you're a northwest boy, and I can feel it in all your work. You were a seeker, part of that lost generation of artists who are all mostly gone now. The last, true renaissance in rock music. The last innovators who rewrote the rock playbook. The true originals in that genre. You did things as an artist with your solo work that took real punk rock balls to do.

Your sudden passing feels like the end of an era, one which streaked in and, most fittingly, mysteriously flickered out way too early.

Love from another Washington son to another.

Thankyou for your music and words. A gift I will always have but we had to let you go.
Rest easy Mr Mark Lanegan

My sincere condolences to his family. I am as so many heartbroken. Mark's music has been such a big part of my youth and to be honest all my life. We were so lucky to see him perform in the 90s with Screaming Trees, with his band at the Koko club, London in December 2017 and with his brother in arm Duke Garwood at Union Chapel, London the following year. He has a voice like no others. He brought joy through his music to so many and left a mark that will not be forgotten. Such a tragic loss. Rest in peace Mark.

Mark, when I first discovered your music in the early 2010s I was in an extremely dark place and it wouldn´t be too much of an exaggeration to say that you helped save my life and your entire body of work is still very important to me. Though I never got to see you perform live, I have no doubt it would have been an amazing and transcendental experience. Rest easy, and when my time comes, I´ll do my best to find you. Peace & Love.

Mark Lanegan... I´m really going to miss you.

Having just finished "Devil in a Coma" a few days ago, I left the final page hoping for the best. His loss is such a devastating one, but I suppose I have to be grateful for having the opportunity to both see him and meet him. Mark clearly had an affinity for Melbourne and that worked out well for me across the 16 shows I attended since 2008.

It is extremely difficult to explain how influential he has been to me. Impossible, in fact. Like many people my age, I first heard Mark alongside Queens of the Stone Age while at secondary school back in 2002. For twenty years I have been following his journey and resurgence. His recent string of solo albums, the collaborations with Isobel and Tinariwen (and so many more - where do I begin?), his poetry, his books and his final trip to my homeland - Ireland.

There is something almost poetic about Mark passing away in rural Ireland, the country where some of his family migrated from. It´s no less heartbreaking though. I maintain that his voice will never be matched and while it´s great that he left us with amazing music, I can´t help but feel that we have lost an icon. At least that´s how I see him.

I have a stash of signed posters, books and other items that are dearly treasured (a few are squeezed into the background). More importantly, pictured here is the set list I grabbed at a 2016 show. I chatted with Mark afterwards and despite it being a brief interaction, it´s a cherished memory that left me with a very special piece of A4 paper.

Honestly, I still can´t believe it. No doubt you are dearly missed by family and a legion of fans, myself included. Wherever you are, keep on being a legend. I´ll keep the records spinning and the whiskey flowing until we meet again.

The most incredible voice in music, forever and always.

I will miss Mark immeasurably. I have met him a great many times, and I even got to give him a kiss - that is a treasured memory. I've loved him since I heard him aged 16, I am now 48 so it's been a long time. He's been such a part of my life, my wedding featured his music, my children know his lyrics. His work is interwoven with my life. I wouldn't have it any other way. I will miss him, yes. I will miss his music, yes. But his presence in the world will be missed more. I love you, Mark. Always will. You were one of us, meeting us after gigs. You were approachable and ours. I will miss that and all the music you had left to give. Rest easy. This hurts. Xxx

The 1st time that i listened to Mark with beautiful and unique voice was that on Mad Season album "above". That moment makes me wanna know about him. His work on music was awesome. Screaming Trees during Grunge in the 90s and then Queen of the Stone Age that shows how much the musician really appreciated his work and contribution on music and community. Im one of your big fans from Indonesia where me and some of my friends still listen and talk about grunge music especially what has been done by Mark.
He was like one of the greatest musician with unique voice and inspiring a lot of the new generation of music.

I have always considered Mark, before a great singer, a kind of friend.
Perhaps because in his voice I found the darkness that came from him and reached me, overwhelming me, and therefore becoming part of me.
Mark was therefore a friend, and without him, I am more alone.

Deepest condolences to all of Mark's family and friends at what must be an indescribably difficult time.

As someone who is a massive fan of his music and written work and has been for pretty much my whole adult life, it hits pretty hard, knowing that we are no longer in his presence.

I can't remember a day in the last 15-20 years or so, when I haven't listened to at least one of his songs.

His words have helped me through numerous difficult times and I am grateful for the wonderful legacy that he was able to leave us.

Fans like myself in the UK and Europe have been spoiled for such a long time with him touring here so regularly, sometimes multiple times a year with his various projects (in these latter years, he has always been available after a show for a signing and a quick chat), and he will leave a huge void.

I'm grateful for your music, Mark, and am glad I had the chance to thank you on more than one occasion.

Sending healing thoughts and strength to all those closest to him.

I loved listening to The music made by Mark Lanegan, an artist not afraid to go to the darkest places and find the light and somehow capture that in a melody and poetry- more than not afraid - a rebel to show authenticity - real and unapologetic, dirty only to be washed clean in the beauty of music
Sad but eternally grateful
