Marlyn Adderton Obituary

Adderton, Marlyn Newburger Marlyn Newburger Adderton, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on February 20, 2014 at the age of 93 with her daughters at her bedside. Wife of the late J. Walter Adderton; mother of Cathee Adderton (Bruce Zebell) of St. Louis, MO, Anne Adderton (Peter Dolan) of St. Louis, MO, and Jenny Vaughan (Michael) of Mission Hills, KS and the late John Adderton; and grandmother to Laura Corcoran (Matt), Andrew Zebell, Meghan Vaughan, Ryan Dolan, Sean Dolan and Sam Vaughan; and great grandmother to her precious Jack Corcoran. Marlyn graduated from Mary Institute in 1939 and later returned to school in her 50s to graduate magna cum laude from UMSL with a BA in Psychology. Marnie was an extraordinary woman in every sense of the word. The world is truly a better place because she was in it. She was active in the St. Louis community serving as a hospice aide for 25 years, a St. Louis Art Museum docent, a hospital volunteer and was very involved in the Girl Scouts. She founded a tutoring program at the Mitchell School and was honored with the 2010 Ageless Remarkable St. Louisans award. She was a world traveler and a life long student. Marnie was like none other and she will be terribly missed by her many friends and most of all by her family. Services: A Memorial Service will be conducted at the Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church, 9450 Clayton Rd., Ladue on Tuesday, February 25 at 2:00 p.m. Private Committal. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Horizon Academy, a school for children with learning disabilities which her daughter Jenny Vaughan helped found, 4901 Reinhardt Dr., Roeland Park, Kansas 66205, or to the St. Louis Zoo or the St. Louis Art Museum. Scarcely a day goes by that I do not remember Marlyn with thanks for all she taught me. Her tolerance for our shenanigans, her good humor, and her sense of responsibility for those less fortunate are entrenched in us all. I love canoing, camping, bird watching, and the glories of the outdoors because of her. I flip a twenty in every troop's treasury during cookie time so that other girls will get just a few of the benefits I received from having Marilyn in my life.

Dear Cathee, Anne, and Jenny: Your mom meant so much to so many. She overcame so many tragedies with so much grace, and she always had so much to give. Over the years, so often I've given unspoken thanks to her for introducing me to something that became an important part of my life: camping, kayaking, cooking, community service, continuing education--she has been my role model for my whole life. If I have been a good mother, a good friend, or a good citizen, it is because of Marlyn. And I am deeply saddened that she is no longer in this world. But I know that her influence on those around her will continue eternally. Love to you and your families.

What a pleasure it was to know your Mother at STL Art Museum events and trips. She never knew a stranger, and
was always warm, kind and loving to all she met, including
me. She will be missed, Elizabeth Swank, docent SLAM
and friend of Anne.

I will always be a fan of your mother's. I first met her at water aerobics and then she recruited me for tutoring at Mitchell School. She taught me the importance of family, community, and love of life. Boy, she was something special.

Please accept my deepest sympathy as you struggle to balance after the death of you wonderful Mother. I knew her both as a fellow docent and as a "Fin Friend." She is sorely missed. May she rest in peace. Scrath that... May her ongoing travels be peaceful!
