Mary Workman Obituary

Mary Alice Workman (née Mayer), 94, passed away on August 22, 2024, in Maryland Heights, MO. Born on March 16, 1930, in Benton, IL, she lived a vibrant and full life characterized by her dedication to family, friends, and community.

Mary graduated from Benton Consolidated High School in 1948. Shortly after, she eloped with the love of her life, Bill Workman. Throughout their 57 years of marriage, they raised four children and enjoyed the company of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary spent most of her life as a dedicated domestic engineer, creating a nurturing home for her family. She briefly worked as a bank teller at Brentwood Bank but found her true calling in managing her bustling household.

Known for her indomitable spirit and infectious laugh, Mary was the quintessential neighborhood mom. She was always ready to offer a sympathetic ear or wise counsel to anyone in need. Her home was a hub of activity, from basement hockey games to school projects. Mary's hobbies included singing and dancing, passions that she pursued from her youth into her later years. An avid fan of old movies and musicals, she also had an encyclopedic knowledge of useless trivia and facts, and was always prepared to bring them forth with minimal prompting.

Mary was a Lutheran, actively participating in her community of faith throughout her life. She was a beacon of love and kindness, extending her warmth to all living creatures, particularly her beloved cats.

She is survived by her children, Mark (Connie) Workman, Michael Workman, Necia Workman, and Alecia (John) Menzano, along with many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, George William "Bill" Workman; her sisters, Ellen (Gene) Baker and Francis (Robert) Henry; and her parents, Fred "Fritz" and Pearl Mayer.

In accordance with her wishes, Mary's remains were donated to further medical research. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, an organization close to her heart.

Mary's legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
