Nicholas Matsakis Obituary

Matsakis, Nicholas D.M.D. The membership of the Hellenic Spirit Foundation is saddened by the loss of our beloved friend, colleague, generous supporter, and co-founder, Dr. Nicholas Matsakis. He played an instrumental roll during his membership in the successful formation, direction and vision of the Hellenic Spirit Foundation. His tenacity, political acumen, organizational skills, and ability to get things done have been a positive and powerful influence in business, Greek Orthodox church affairs and in education, covering the entire spectrum of Hellenic American issues. His many years of dynamic service to The Justice for Cyprus Committee, Ahepa plus his intimate involvement in Ahepa Chapter #53 along with other important organizations in philanthropic, educational, social and business interest endeared him to all who knew him. His dedication and leadership, his presence as a human being, friend and advocate will be immeasurably missed. Our profound and heartfelt condolences are extended to his beloved wife Theodora and the entire Matsakis family. May his memory be eternal. Contributions in his name may be made to the Dr. Nicholas and Theodora Matsakis Hellenic Cultural Center, 8001 Natural Bridge Rd., St. Louis, MO 631214433 Hellenic Spirit Foundation

A dear friend that has touched our hearts and a true role model that has inspired us beyond words can describe. Dr. Matsakis will always be remembered with "Agape" and fond memories and will live in our hearts.

Aphrodite, your father sounds to have been a wonderful, worthy human being (axios). I don't know you or your family, but I read about your father's passing thru a mutual friend and read of his accomplishments in the obituary. I am from the island of Cyprus so his participation in wanting the good of the island touched me. May his memory be everlasting and one day we will all meet again.. o Theos makarison....

Dr. Aphrodite Matsakis, beloved daughter

Markos Mangarides

This is a tribute to Nicholas Matsakis in a slightly different manner: To speak of the proof of this good father as evidenced in his 3 children. Though unable to meet Nick (almost a few times, but alas, not to be), to know his daughter Aphrodite as one of my dearest of friends is to know him also in ways. Sufficient to say that the gentle kindness and Christ-like qualities of Aphrodite, as influenced by her earthly father, to be a kind and humble reflection of Jesus, this is in reality is one of the finest tributes one can say about this great man: In how his/their 3 children turned out so wonderfully. Aphrodite is not only my friend but my hero, she is a national treasure, and she writes powerfully about how to deal with certain of life's traumas, not an easy topic but very much needed. So in my honoring his daughter Aphrodite, I also honor the father who raised her. She is with a beautiful heart and soul, as I am sure Nicholas was and now is in his spiritual forever life with Jesus. We are saddened to know a few who don't get it, who forget to be kind. But all the more reason to appreciate those who do quietly go about living with honor, love, and truly are a reflection of Jesus. This is Aphrodite. I am honored and blessed in her friendship so fine to me. I am sorry I could not get to meet Nicholas, but as I say, to know his daughter and her fine happy spirit is to also know him in ways. Wiser than me taught this truism: One life, it will soon be passed. Only what's done for Christ shall last.

Dr. Matsakis was a wonderful, gentle man and one of the earliest memories I have from outside my family. I still remember the small bucket of toys in the waiting room of his dental office and the photo of President Kennedy tacked up next to his instruments. He once told me he put it up the day the President died.

Dr. Nicholas Matsakis was a wonderful, generous man. Our family was fortunate to have known and been very close friends with him and his family. He will be greatly missed by everyone. He and my late husband Elias were like brothers. Nick has gone to be with the Lord.
My sympathy and condolences to his family. Jennie Vlanton
