Raymond Florman Obituary

Raymond Florman of Prairie Village, KS, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, at age 78, after a long illness. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on November 18, 1947, to Raymond J. and Margaret Mary "Marge" (née Rapplean) Florman.

Raymond graduated from McCluer High School and the University of Missouri–St. Louis. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and received an Honorable Discharge in 1976.

At age 12, Raymond began working at A-1 Bicycle Sales & Service, the business his father founded in 1953. As a junior cyclist, he took first place in the 44th Annual Missouri State Amateur Bicycle League (ABL) Championships. The Florman family was a pioneering force in the world of cycling in St. Louis. In 2015, A-1 Bicycle was sold to Billy Goat Bicycle Company. Raymond forged deep connections within the cycling community as a mentor, manager, and friend to many. His guidance was actively sought for his extensive knowledge and technical excellence in all things bicycles. His generosity was without limits, his work ethic tireless, and his business acumen and high standards influenced many young employees in their work lives today.

Raymond will be remembered as well for his work fostering over 60 Australian Shepherds, making the store a lively hub for dog rescue inquiries. He influenced many with his love of opera, classical music, O'Connell's Pub, The Clancy Brothers, Ireland, Sherlock Holmes and his sharp sense of style. His surprising, witty insights and quips were enjoyed by all. Raymond's light will always shine in the lasting impact and inspiration he left behind for so many of us.

Above all, Raymond was devoted to his wife, Ingrid, of 47 years, his two adoring daughters, Britta and Kerstin, and his cherished granddaughter, Lucy.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Ingrid Anderson Florman; his two daughters, Britta Florman Rice (Matthew) of Kansas City, MO, and Kerstin Ingrid Robertson (Cory) of Roeland Park, KS; his granddaughter, Lucy Nicole Robertson; his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn Ann Geiger (David) of Ferguson, MO; his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Patricia Jeanne Cannon (the late Richard Florman) of Ballwin, MO; Jan Anderson Avallone (Bob) of Lexington, MA; Todd Scott Anderson (Peggy) of Denver, CO; Leslie Proctor Anderson of Englewood, CO; and Allison Anderson Baca (Kurt) of McLean, VA. Raymond was a devoted uncle to 14 amazing nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Richard William Florman.

A private memorial service will be held at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Kansas.

If you wish to honor Raymond's memory, please donate to your favorite dog rescue or animal shelter.

I met Ray over 50 years ago through a mutual friend who referred to him affectionately as "Bicycle Ray". I interacted with him at A-1 Bicycles on numerous occasions when I had my bicycle serviced, also eventually purchasing a new bicycle there. His father was not amused that Ray would be distracted from his work, as he and I would engage in conversation about mutual friends, as well as his catching me up on his personal life. I readily recall his deep affection for his wife and his two daughters. I also had occasion to join a group of his friends when they bicycled locally, but I was such a "rookie" that I recall his pushing me up a hill by placing his hand on my back so that I could maintain the pace. (I still ride a bicycle in Forest Park, but I avoid the hilly south side of the bike trail and merely retrace my steps on the level part of the trail. ) I encountered Ray at the visitation for his friend Joe Stiens, but it has been several years since I have seen him. (I did not realize that he had moved out of the area.). I will always remember him fondly, not because of his bicycle expertise, but because he was such a friendly, decent person who always made me feel special when he engaged me in conversation. My deepest condolences to his wife Ingrid, his daughters Britta and Kerstin, and his granddaughter Lucy.

Ingrid, I´m so sorry for your loss. Raymond sounds like he was quite a character! It sounds like you have moved to the KC area but if you haven´t, I´d love to meet up. Wishing you and your girls all the best as you love and support each other getting through this difficult time.
