Richard Figueras Obituary

Figueras, Richard I. 79, died peacefully at home on Jan. 19 in the loving company of his family. Born in Chicago, Ill., on Dec. 18, 1935, he lived a rich life. Upon graduating from Parks College of St. Louis University in 1956, he began his career in aerospace engineering at McDonnell Douglas, but was soon lured to work for Emerson Electric in its missiles and structures lab, later moving to its flight systems department. In 1964, he earned his master's degree in engineering mechanics from St. Louis University. During his more than 40-year career, his knowledge and experience in aerospace design analysis contributed to the success of defense projects that included the spinning rocket program for the US Army and Air Force, the TOW missile, the Helitow program and the Tunner Cargo Loader, among others. His projects for the U.S. and international armed forces took him on travels to Italy, France, Sweden, Sardinia, Germany, The Netherlands and Thailand. He is honored at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum for his contributions to aeronautics and space flight. He was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church in University City, where he was a parishioner for nearly 50 years and volunteer for the Society of St. Vincent DePaul. In retirement, he enjoyed swimming, reading about military history, math and science, spending time with his grandchildren and meeting for lunch with his former colleagues, the EOFs (Emerson Old Farts). He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a kind friend to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his deep intellect, endearing sense of humor and gentle nature. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Figueras, with whom he celebrated 45 years of marriage; his children, Miguel Figueras, Ligaya Figueras, Delphine Figueras, and Jose Figueras; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepmother Lourdes Figueras; his sisters, Nancy Zubik, Maria Romina Hench and Annie Figueras, and many other close relatives. Services: Visitation services Friday, Jan. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 6403 Clemens Ave.; funeral Mass Saturday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul of All Saints Catholic Church. www.boppchapel.com

Dorothy, so sorry to hear of the passing of your husband. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Did you know that Liguya and I play soccer together? From UUM preschool to soccer - life is full of strange meetings.

Miguel
Your mom and dad have always been some of the best role models for you and your siblings. I have come to know many parents over the many years of water polo and I can honestly say I have never met anyone finer than your parents. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your entire family. Hang on to all of your special memories of your dad because when your pain subsides, you will be left with those special memories. May God bless you all.

To the Family of Richard Figueras / the Figueras Clan:
Our most sincere condolences on the passing of Dick, a beloved husband, a loving father/brother/cousin/uncle/grandfather. Praying for spiritual strength for all of you at this most difficult time. Offer your grieving and weeping to the Lord. Remember that our faith teaches us that he is now in communion with the saints. Celebrate his beautiful life and share the lovely memories you have of him.
Please know that my family will offer a requiem mass for the repose of his soul. Having read his obituary, I am so touched by the great things he accomplished in his life (especially in his profession). Yet from the brief encounters with him (during Eden's and Val's wedding, Zeny's and Triggie's wedding, and when Uncle died), I realize and am so touched by his humility and his graciousness in his dealing with the countless friends his cousins brought to their home on West Beach. He truly will be sorely missed by so many.

Dick was, and always will be, a quiet, gentle kind, brilliant man. You cannot say Dick, however, without saying, "Dorothy." They were and always will be "connected at the hip." My thoughts are with you all at this time. Much love, Penny Engelsman (and, of course, Alan too...)
