Richard Yang Obituary

Yang, Dr. Richard H. On Thursday, October 12, 2018. Dr Richard H. Yang, loving father of four children, passed peacefully at the age of 93 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, a country he loved deeply. Dr. Yang was an emeritus professor at Washington University in St. Louis and attended sabbatical teachings at other universities including Columbia, Yale, Oxford and Cambridge. He has published several books discussing his deep understanding of the United States constitution in correlation to Taiwan's constitution. Dr. Yang had a passion for education, politics and writing. His Chinese calligraphy were much admired by friends and loved ones and his calligraphies were displayed at the old favorite Mandarin House and many other establishments in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He also was an avid collector of Chinese stamps. Dr. Yang was known for being a caring mentor to many of his students. He established funds at Washington University alumnus and University of Sun Yat-Sen to help support undergraduates. His favorite foods were always the simplest, such as McDonald's fish burger, and fries, and apple pot pie, and Chinese onion pancakes. When he made his hot and sour soup, he always amused his children when he threw in pizza and left overs. Dr. Yang loved his parents deeply and always looked forward to the day of reuniting with them. Dr. Yang is survived by his four children, Nigel, Wei-Li, Hwai-Li and Nien-Li and his youngest sister, and his grandsons Jeffrey, Cameron and granddaughters Jennifer, Madison and Sofie. He will be deeply missed. Dr. Yang's favorite sayings: Education is something that no person can ever take away from you. Educate yourself as far as you can in life as learning never ceases; Do not drink, smoke or have vices and always try to be a good person to all in life; Its not how much money you make but how much you save. Dr. Yang lived life simply and always spoke lovingly of his beloved mother Shih Ming Yueh and father Yang Chih-Chang and missed them daily. One of his last wishes was to establish a Yang's foundation in memory of his parents as a living legacy. A special honorary mention and thanks must be made to his mentor and second father Dr Hu Shih, a Chinese philosopher and diplomat who contributed to Chinese liberalism and language reform and was nominated for a Nobel Prize in literature. Dr. Yang closely worked for Dr Hu Shih as a personal assistant. During this time, Dr Hu Shih mentored Dr. Yang as a father figure and for this Dr Yang will forever be indebted to him. Services: Funeral services will be arranged in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. For further information, please contact Wei-Li at [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Yang has requested proceeds to be donated to the Yang's foundation, which will be a charity organization established to assist students who have great potential.

I was a friend of Dr. Yang when I was a student at Washington University in the early 1970s. Although we were not in touch recently, I will never forget him and I have a piece of calligraphy in my bedroom that he made and gave to me. He is very much missed.

In the early days (1974) we be friended Professor Yang. He and his wife had given us advice to open an upscale restaurant in the United States. Later we opened Mandarin House Restaurant in St. Louis. Mandarin House, Chinese Logo was personally written by Professor Yang. Standing in the city of St. Louis, Missouri for more than 40 years, the beauty of its fonts is widely praised by many people. Professor Yang is an approachable person, willing to help the weak and the poor. his generous and noble personality, I admire very much. We will miss him. I hope Professor Yang rest in peace. I first met Mr. Yang nearly forty years ago. His son and I were high school classmates and good friends. He was always kind and generous. He spoke softly but always with purpose and wisdom. Small in stature and gentle in his ways, Professor Yang was a giant of a man. He was always dignified, respected, scholarly, and direct. He included me in celebrations of Chinese culture and events such as Chinese New Year and Ten-Ten Day celebrations. It was through the Yang family that my love for China, her people, and her culture took root. I wish I had told him that. American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, "When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men." Richard Yang was a great man. His light shines on.
