He was quite a guy. Even when I stepped out of line, he could reel me back in and yet always be cool about it; wish I'd got to know him long after graduation. I'm sure we could have been great friends.

He was such a colorful, bright, out-going guy and apparently he stayed that way right up to the end of his 88 years. I wish I'd had the opportunity to meet him socially--long after my graduation from his class. I would have raised a glass to salute his vibrant personality--all smiles and charm. I'm sure he made alot of people around him happy!

I had the privilege of being Mr. Kurtz's student at Webster Groves High School for the academic year of 1968-69. I was enrolled in his Humanities Class which was actually an experiment in team teaching. The one word I would use in characterizing Roger Kurtz is kind. The second word I would choose is generous. He counseled me and even agreed for brief period to give me a lift to my week-en job at the 801 building on Skinker on Fridays. (At the time, he was living about a block away from there I think). We had long discussions and his advice in my career choices was sound. I ended up spending the rest of my life in Europe, but I always kept him in mind. A fine man whose kindness was matched by his wisdom.

I had Mr. Kurtz for a European History class back in 1966-67. I remember him bringing history to life in a way that I had not even known was possible--it affected me for the rest of my life, as evidenced by a full wall of history books and biographies of historical figures. Topping off my experience with Mr. Kurtz was his inclusion of music and arts in every unit we studied. In my senior year of high school, I was well on my way to becoming a professional musician, and I was beyond thrilled to see my history teacher become an advocate for the arts, and especially music. Mr. Kurtz was able to maintain a teacher-student relationship with a student while at the same time, awakening passion for his subject in the improbable person of a 17 year old boy. My hat is off to him!

I had Mr. Kurtz for 9th grade Civics. I learned a lot from him and really enjoyed his class. He encouraged me to go on a school trip to Washington, D.C. I attribute my interest in current events and politics to Roger. Rest in peace Mr. Kurtz!

Mr. Kurtz was fun. I was on the Webster Echo and asked him to do a scary photo pose for a story about the Black Hole of Calcutta that he had taught us about. He went along with it. Great memory.

I absolutely loved Mr. Kurtz and am so sad to hear of his passing. He was so kind and compassionate and seemed to love what he did. He truly made an impact on my life, and any chance I got, I talked about "the history teacher" who made a difference in my life. He will truly be missed. My condolences to the family.
