Ruth Bromley Obituary

Bromley, Ruth M. widow of Bill Bromley, died at the age of 90 on November 10, 2010 in St. Louis. Ruth was born in 1919 in Lowell, Mass. and married in 1942. She was one of the wives who spent years writing daily letters, worrying, and praying that her husband would return from the Second World War. When he returned in 1946, they moved to Springfield, MA, where he resumed his career with Monsanto, and moved to St. Louis in 1965. She enjoyed long-lasting friendships with the people who worked with Bill. Ruth was a piano player, dancer, swimmer, team bowler for over 30 years and golfer. She earned Life Master status from the ACBL in contract bridge, a game she played for almost 50 years, succeeding at regional, national and international tournaments. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, John Jack Cheswick and Agnes McCormick Cheswick; brother, Johnny Cheswick; sister Dorothy Reid; and her husband. She is survived by her four children and their families: Jackie Sanderson (husband Bob) of St. Louis; William H. Bromley, III (wife Susan Detering) of Orange, Texas; Martha Bromley of Kirkwood; and Ruth DePew Prokopf (husband Michael) of Kirkwood. She has seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In the final years of her life, there were many people who treated her with great care, kindness and generosity and made it possible for her to continue some of her activities. Her family wishes to thank the staff at the Bethesda-Barclay House, Bethesda Gardens, Sunrise in Des Peres and, especially, Brooking Park; the team at Leach's Amoco; the OWCC- Algonquin bowlers and staff at OWCC; John Price of Rubin-Brown; Donna Wiese and Kevin Doak, formerly of Bank of America; Ralph Lowenbaum, a great neighbor; and many other friends who helped her enjoy her last years. Services: There will be a private funeral at BOPP Chapel on November 20 at 10 a.m. followed by burial in Resurrection Cemetery.

Jackie, Martha, Ruthie and family,
I still remember my first meeting with Nana and "Mr. Nana", as Alicia called your father--they came driving up the street in their big fancy car while Jackie and I were standing in the driveway solving the problems of the world, and it was a delight for this country girl to meet them. Nana was the funniest babysitter Katie and Marcie had, by far! She was a true lady, a very intelligent woman, and I am honored to have known her. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I didn't know Ruth Bromley but I know her daughters. They are women of grace, poise and strong character and I am confident that those traits are reflective of their dear mother's as well. My thoughts and prayers are with the Bromley family. She is looking down on each of them with her hand on their hearts as she helps them through these difficult days ahead.
