Stan Schaefer was my history teacher and basketball and baseball coach, at Assumption High School in East St. Louis. He was a wonderful person, an excellent teacher and an enthusiastic and supportive coach. As with most lay and religious teachers we had at Assumption, he was a positive influence on his students and players.

I wish I had the opportunity to get to know Stan better than I did...but so many peoples wishes remain just that...a wish. I can say that Stan was quite the comedian...he always had me laughing when he stopped in the office, and I'm thankful for that because I'll always remember Stan with a smile on his face. He will truly be missed here at City Hall but his joy and laughter will always be in our hearts.

Liz and family:

It is extremely obvious that Stan has touched so many people during his life. From his days at Assumption, through the Collinsville High School days, and finally as Mayor of Collinsville, one theme runs throughout his life...public servant.

Whether it was as teacher, coach, counselor, or politician, he helped others as few have been able to in their lives.

I learned from Stan that it was never too late to start a new career and never inappropriate to give back to the community that has given so much to you. Most people knew him from his days in office or in school. I had the additional pleasure to watch him on the softball field as a player. Both he and my father were members of the Horseshoe Lounge Senior Olympics Softball Team. Most times when I would come home, my father would let me in on the latest escapades of Stan and the city in general.

I last saw Stan in December when I was home for the Democrat Club Christmas Dinner and a visit with my family. I'm glad I got to see him and Liz one last time.

God bless you, Liz. I hope you find peace and comfort in knowing how many people Stan touched in his life and how he made a difference.

Liz, we grieve with you and your family in your sorrow. Although Stan has died, yet, fortunately, he lives on, in your children and in his students. A teacher, Henry Adams has written, affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.

Goodbye, my friend. What a glorious time it was, Stan, those happy days of our youth, when you and I and all our friends were at Assumption.

To Liz and the Schaeffer Family:
As you can see from the entries in this guest book as well as the huge turnout at the wake and funeral, Stan was beloved by many. I first met Stan as a guidance counselor at Collinsville High School. I later had the pleasure of working for him as a member of the Planning Commission.

Stan's incredible vision for this City's future became contagious to all of us who had the pleasure of working with him. He was always there to provide a friendly smile and a calming voice. He will be greatly missed.

My sympathies to you and your family.

Mr. Schaeffer (after 30 years I can only call him that) was the best teacher I had in high school.

I was in his freshman English class at Collinsville in 1976. I almost failed his class. But through his unique and individual teaching methods, I really did learn more there and have never forgotten anything he told us about the classics.

I have thought of him with fond memories all these years and laugh how I almost failed the class but learned so much.

I got to tell Mr. Schaeffer this at a political rally in 2006. I am so happy I did, and I wanted his family to know also how he really did influence me. Like I told him, everytime I read a "real" book, I think of him :)

He was also a wonderful mayor for this town. He will be missed.

March 9, 2008

My condolences to Stan's family. As a graduate of Assumption High School, Class of '71, I can still recall pleasant memories of Stan, there. It seemed like he was kind to everyone. I particularly remember the night of a basketball game, vs one of the other E.St.Louis schools. It was a tight contest, and very emotion filled. After a particularly "rough" play on the court, emotions spilled over, and fans started leaving the stands, for the court. Stan, as the Athletic Director, IMMEDIATELY took charge, and defused a potentially disastrous situation. That incident, the "take charge" kind of person he was, plus his kindness, is how I remember Stan. My thoughts and prayers are with you all...God bless.

Tom Hunter

March 9, 2008

Mr. Schaeffer was my 8th grade football coach at Webster Jr High back in the ealry 70's and my admiration for him has never ceased. He was a great person who made sure everyone on the team, from the most talented to the least talented, felt that they were an integral part of the team. He was the epitome of who you want to coach your kids.

His passing is a great loss to the community, but the celebration of his life by so many proves just how much he touched the lives of those that crossed his path.

I join all in offering my sincerest condolences to his family.

I had the MAYOR OF COLLINSVILLE for my history class at Assumption High School. He was a driven and very bright Teacher in those days and a no nonsense disciplinarian. I deserved and got hands on correction in the hallway and at my desk and I remember how gifted he was at teaching even though I wasn't interested in History at the time. He was an excellent Teacher. The last time I saw Mr. Schaeffer was when he actually lived next door to my sister on Sumner, I remembered him and told him so. He was a good man and he tried so hard to help others during his life of service. My heartfelt condolences and sympathy go out to his family and remember weeping may last for a fortnight but joy comes in the morning. With time all wounds will heal. 1971-1972 Assumption high school student who remembers Mr. Stan Schaeffer

Liz and Family: Mary Lou and I were so sorry to hear of your loss. The loss of "Stanley" , as I used to call him, saddened our hearts as we recalled some of the times we spent with him. Liz, I'm sure Stanley told you all the stories of his "escapades" when he was single and sassy. I remember Stanley from those days of the Tasmanian Devils (his slow pitch softball team) and St. Elizabeth's playground athletics and on and on. I have a million memories of him. As most of these messages say, he was a warm person. He was the warmest person that I have ever known. May God bless his soul. We will keep him in our prayers.

Carrie and Family,
Stan was a great mayor and my all-time favorite teacher. It's a very sad day in Collinsville.

Nancy Moss, Councilman

March 8, 2008

Dear Liz and family,
Stan was a wonderful man of boundless energy and cheerfulness who poured himself out every day for our community. His normal "part time" mayoral schedule would be daunting to many 30 year olds. He was a "coach" to the City of Collinsville, as well as on the athletic field. Stan led by example and with kindness, and constantly encouraged people. He had the vision and the determination to move our city forward, and he will always be "Mr. Collinsville" to me. Stan loved much and he was much loved by so many people.

He is known and respected throughout Illinois and the Metro region for his work for the betterment of our city, region and state.

He taught me more about optimism and being positive in tough situations than I had ever learned before. I am honored to have served with him, and to call him my friend. I will miss him beyond words. Thank you Liz, and the rest of his beloved family, for sharing him with us.

Deborah Russell

Liz and Schaeffer Family;
I've know Stan just 14 years. As the new kid in town, I met him on the softball field at the Jaycee Sports Complex. Having worked with many coaches, I new then, that Stan was an exceptional person.

It has been my honor to know Stan in a variety of roles over these years. Always, though, he was a good listener, up-beat, creative, warm, supportive and quick with his humor. I can not begin to share the feelings that I have toward Stan as a friend, colleague and fellow community improvement activist.

We are all so much better for having Stan as part of our lives and the community will never know the full extent of his positive influence.

Thank you for sharing him with everyone. We are all the better for having known Stan and all the sadder for this loss.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Liz Schaeffer and family.
The people of Collinsville and the metro community have lost a great friend and representative. Stan stood for what most of us want in our community, a friendly place to live and work; peace, prosperity and things just "humming along" in general
. No matter what his schedule or how many things he had on his mind, he always had time for people.
I will especially miss his trips to the office with his beloved canine companion "Rip", the stories he like to share abd his enthusiasm for life in general. Rest peacefully, Stan.

My deep sympathy goes out to Mayor Schaeffer's family and friends, to the Collinsville City Council members, to City Hall workers, and to all the citizens of Collinsville on their loss.

Being a native of Collinsvile, I knew Mayor Stan Schaeffer for many years. During the fall of 1974, Mr. Schaeffer was my football coach during my freshman year at Collinsville High School. He was a successfull high school football coach and he made playing football very fun. I looked up to him back then and I certainly did most recently as a fellow Mayor. After I was elected in April 2005, he gave me some friendly suggestions on how to handle a variety of issues.

Mayor Schaeffer will certainly be missed.

Stan Schaeffer touched a lot of lives; he was known by everyone and loved by all. As a leader who truly cared about this community, and as a friend who always had time for a smile and a chat, he will be greatly missed. I feel privileged to have known such a great man and lucky to be able to call him my friend. I, along with all of us at City Hall, will cherish the memory of him and his faithful sidekick, his "vice mayor", the Ripster.
