Briggs, Terry
Passed away unexpectedly at his home on 2/14/2024 at the age of 68. Terry was born on 4/6/1955, to William and Dorothy Briggs. He grew up in North County St. Louis and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1977 with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. In 1978, he married his college sweetheart, Lorie Johns, and they had 3 children: Josh, Jeremy, and Haley. Terry worked in various public facing roles at MSD, SITE Improvement Association, and the Eastern Missouri Laborers Union. He was elected Mayor of the City of Bridgeton during the tailend of his career and into retirement. Throughout his career, he pursued causes he was passionate about through board service with the Productive Living Board, Special Olympics Board, Special School District Board of Education and Municipal League of Metro St. Louis.
Terry's career gave him many opportunities to have fun helping people, and that also blended into his family life. He enjoyed taking family road trips in the various mini-vans the family owned - emphasizing at least one historic site; regardless of how far it was, he always knew a "shortcut".
Terry was often on the sidelines coaching the kids sports teams or out hunting with them during duck season. If he wasn't enjoying a round of golf at Berry Hill, during the quiet times around the house you'd find him watching black and white movies or old Western shows alongside Lorie. As the grandkids came along, he became the ultimate "yes man"; willingly buying sweets, making trips to the park, playing outside, and even starring as "The Alligator Man" in short ipad movies they made.
Terry is survived by his wife Lorie (Johns) Briggs, his children Joshua Briggs, Jeremy (Ali) Briggs, Haley Briggs; three grandchildren, Nora, Elodie and Caleb; and siblings Daniel (Candace) Briggs, Debbie (Jeff) Burley and John (Vicki) Briggs; three nephews and five great nephews and nieces; and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, Terry's family asks that donations be made to Valley Industries Sheltered Workshop at 143 James S. McDonnell Blvd, Hazelwood, Missouri 63042. The link to make a donation is: https://valleyind.net/fundraising-events/make-a-donation/

Mr. Briggs was a neighbor of my father-in-law, only a couple of houses up the street. My father-in-law was up in age, passed in 2016 at 93. Mr. Briggs would shovel my father-in-law's driveway for free whenever it snowed out of the kindness of his heart. Mu father-in-law would get a cheesecake and take it to Mr. Briggs to show his appreciation.
Mr. Briggs was also very helpful after my father-in-law passed, kinda keeping an eye on the property, since we lived a long distance from Bridgeton. I only knew Mr. Briggs a short time, but I soon learned that he was a kind and caring man. I will certainly miss his waves and smile whenever I drive by his home!

I’m so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, we only get to see each other once a year at our family reunions, but this past one was especially memorable because I was able to sit down and talk to Terry for quite a while, and was truly blessed to have spent that time with him. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

Lori,
You are in my heart and in my prayers. Terry was one of the great ones! He meant so much to Dick, through
friendship and working side by side. When Terry would ask, "Is there anything I could do" , he meant it. They weren't idle words. Our sorrow is great, because our love was great.

Terry and I were the news department at KFAL-KKCA Radio in Fulton when we were “radio rookies” in the late 70’s. He was a good teammate, a hard worker and more than anything a great guy. I am not surprised that he accomplished so much in his life. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Briggs’ family.

I met Terry Briggs in 2000. He was a member of the Special School District Board of Education that hired me as Superintendent of Schools. We
worked together for 8 years,
during which Terry was instrumental in helping pass
two tax levy increases that
allowed us to dramatically raise
teacher salaries from 24 out 25
in StL County to the top 3. Terry´s passion for service and
his sweet,caring nature were
evident even then. He was a
truly GENTLE man. It was a
privilege to know him.
My heartfelt sympathy and
condolences to Laurie and
her children.
