Thurmon Peete Obituary

Peete, Thurmon E. 'Peete' was born on October 31, 1946 in Covington, TN to Charlie R. Peete, Sr. and Maudell Peete; he was the third of fifteen children. His Mother (Maudell Peete), father (Charlie E. Peete, Sr.); two brothers: Earnest Peete and Robert Peete and one sister, Lynn Peete preceded him in death. Thurmon was educated in both the Tennessee and Mississippi School Districts; in addition he graduated with honors from the Career Beauty College and additionally graduated from the Forest Park Community College with a Degree in Arts and Music. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970. He was awarded the Nation Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Purple Heart for his service. Thurmon reaffirmed his religious faith in the 1970's. He was the first African American to join the ranks of businessmen, in Richmond Heights on Clayton Road, when he opened 'One Step Ahead'. A melting pot for beauty! 'Pete' was an active member of the St. Louis Chapter of the Tennessee Alumni, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Bradley Avenue Blues Band. During his life he enjoyed traveling both stateside and abroad, Bar-be-ques with his family and friends, not to mention jam sessions with the band. His being touched those near and far, God Bless! He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving companion, Susan McGuire; children, Thurmon Lamont Griffin, Maurice Hamblin, Getta Peete, Taylor Davis; ten grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Charlie R. Peete, Jr. (Mattie), Lillie M. Peete, Elmer L. Peete (Vanessa), Lucille Thomas (Eugene), Willie Peete (Costella), Nora Peete-Jones (Jeffrey), Ricky Peete (Maxine), John Peete, Jacqueline Peete, Vera Peete and Ophelia Peete; stepchildren, Jonathan L. Hengst, Jr. (Krista), Jason L. Hengst (Jessica), Jami L. Walker (David), Jeremy L. Hengst and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.Services: Visitation 4-7 p.m., Sat., Oct. 6, 2007, LAYNE Renaissance Chapel, LLC, 7302 W. Florissant. Services and Jam Session, 1 p.m., Sun., Oct. 7, Forest Park Zoo, River Camp (Zoo South Entrance) Wells St./Tamm Ave. Interment, Jefferson Barracks Cemetery, 10 a.m., Wed., Oct. 10, 2007. In lieu of flowers the family sincerely request that donations be made to the American Heart Assn. and DAV Assn.

I only just learned about this awful news of Mr. Peete's death. He was a dear friend to me and my family for 30 years, and his smile and charming personality will be deeply and sorely missed.

Peete was a great neighbor for the 5 yrs. that my family and I lived on Bradley Ave. He was always so jovial and willing to offer a helping hand. He will be greatly missed by myself, my husband and my two kids.
