Crandall, The Honorable William H., Jr.
passed away peacefully on June 30, 2024, at the age of 84 in Saint Louis, MO. Born on September 27, 1939, Bill was known for his thoughtful, generous, and kind demeanor, paired with a mischievous streak and a strong dedication to fairness and hard work.
He graduated from Webster Groves High School in 1957, followed by earning a B.S.B.A. in 1961 and a J.D. in 1963, both from Washington University. His commitment to justice was evident through his extensive legal career, serving as Magistrate Judge in the Eighth District from 1968 to 1975, Circuit Judge in the 21st Judicial Circuit from 1975 to 1981, and later as an Appellate Judge in the Missouri Court of Appeals Eastern District from 1981 to 2005, including a term as Chief Judge. He also had the honor of sitting as a Special Judge on the Missouri Supreme Court.
In addition to his legal career, he proudly served in the United States Army until 1967 and in the United States Navy until 1975, receiving honorable discharges from both branches. His commitment to his country was a significant part of his life's work.
Bill was a devout member of Webster Hills United Methodist Church in Webster Groves, MO, and Harmonie Church in Innsbrook, MO. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his service to both his community and family.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed upland bird hunting, fishing, golf, and traveling with his wife, Carol. These activities brought him great joy and peace throughout his life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Crandall (Papendick); sister-in-law, Sandra Papendick; children, James B. Crandall (Laura Wurm) and Dr. Laura Crandall (Dr. Erin Friedman); and grandchildren, Nyssia, Lillian, Waylon, and Caroline. He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Crandall, Sr. and Louise Crandall (Gilmore), and his brother-in-law, Richard C. Papendick.
Visitation will be held on July 12th, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bopp Chapel, Kirkwood, MO. A service will follow on July 13th, 2024, at 10 a.m., also at Bopp Chapel, with a graveside service including military honors at St. Paul's Churchyard.

I am very sorry that I was out of town for the memorial service. I never knew Judge Crandall in the courtroom but knew him well in the field hunting pheasant and chukar. He was a consummate gentleman and jovial companion, whose fellowship I will miss. My deepest sympathy to Carol and the rest of the family.

Judge Crandall spent his Fall Sundays as an original, "Big Red Tailgater". Cheering on the Cardinals was difficult at times, but was the greatest way to grow up. Judge Crandall added humor and wit to every game. The entire O'Brien family sends our condolences.
