Alice Hurst Obituary
July 4, 1933 - February 26, 2023
Gulfport, Mississippi - Gulfport, Mississippi - Alice Young Hurst, age 89, left the bonds of this earth Sunday, February 26, 2023, after a brief illness. She passed away peacefully, with family at her side.
Alice was born in Indiana, but was raised in Gulfport from the age of two, graduating from Gulfport High, class of 1951. She married and raised a family in San Diego, California, then returned to Gulfport to be a companion to her mother in her final years.
She was a fondly-remembered employee of the Harrison County Library System, and was a longtime member of Friends of the Library.
One of her greatest legacies is as a Sunday-school teacher at Mississippi City United Methodist Church, following in the footsteps of her mother. Her legendary Christmas pageant costumes, substantial arts and crafts collection, and inspirational teaching materials are in use to this day.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Fredrick and Esther Young, and her brother, Jon Young. She is survived by her loving son Mark Hurst, doting daughter-in-law Cara May, and beloved grandson Christopher Cassada.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to Friends of the Library or a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, March 6th, 2023, at Mississippi City United Methodist Church, 219 Courthouse Road, Gulfport, MS.
