Kiln, MS
Donald August Dorn, Sr. died peacefully on Friday, January 27, 2012 surrounded by family at his home in Kiln, MS. He was 79. He was born on September 2, 1932 to Alphonse D. Dorn Sr., of Ansley, MS and Lucille F. Antoine of New Orleans, LA. A Catholic, he was a loving husband and a father of 7 children and 2 step children.
He was the beloved husband of Mary Beth Ladner Dorn, his wife of 25 years.
He is preceded by his loving wife, Betty Gene LaFontaine Dorn; two brothers, Wesley John Dorn and Alphonse Daniel Dorn Jr. of Waveland, MS and a son-in-law, David Gallagher.
He is survived by his children, Christine Gallagher Dorn (Louie Storey) of Bay St. Louis, MS; Donald Dorn Jr. (Debbie Burton) of Picayune, MS; David Dorn (Eileen Wilcox) of Waveland, MS; Denise Dorn Fayard (Rickey Fayard) of Waveland, MS; Janine Dorn Edwards of Waveland; Lisa Dorn Holzhauser of Kiln, MS; Christopher Dorn (Devin Besancon) of Waveland, MS; Kelli Kingston of Kiln, MS; and Kerri Kingston Golmon (Roy Golmon) of Gulf Breeze, FL. He is also survived by his loving sister, Janet Dorn Ladner (Earl Ladner) of Waveland, MS. He was known by all as "Poppa" and is survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Poppa had 19 grandchildren; Jamie Gallagher Mitchell (Doug Mitchell), Jonathan Gallagher (Melissa LaFontaine Gallagher), Corey Dorn (Christie Lee Dorn), Chad Dorn (Valerie Lane Dorn), Daniel Dorn (Becca Gardner Dorn), Derek Dorn (Stephanie Niebuhr Dorn), Justin Fayard, Kacey Edwards Ponthieux (Gary Ponthieux), Jeremy Edwards, T.J. Holzhauser, Tyler Holzhauser, Taylor Holzhauser, Melissa Dorn Petersen (Chris Petersen), David Dorn II (Amie Israel Dorn), Matthew Dorn, Cass Kingston, Nathan Golmon, Phillip Golmon, Maeson Dorn; and 20 great grandchildren.
He went to school in Waveland, MS. Donald was Waveland's longest serving police officer, who began his career in 1965 as a part time night patrolman with no pay. In 1966, he was named Assistant City Marshall and when Waveland was incorporated in 1972, he was appointed as Waveland's first Chief of Police. He retired in 1991.
One of Poppa's favorite things to do was to cook for his family and tend to his garden. He made a positive impact on everyone he met and has left his family with lots of fond memories. Poppa will be sadly missed by all.
The visitation will be Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis, MS. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 1:00 pm for a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 pm at St. Clare Catholic Church in Waveland, MS. Intombment will follow in Waveland Cemetery in Waveland, MS.
Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis, MS is in charge of the arrangements.
