John M. "Jack" Humphreys, Jr. departed this life on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017 at his home. He lived 91years and he would be the first to tell you that 'he did it his way'!
Visitation will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in St. Francis Hall on Friday, May 26th, 2017 beginning at 10:00am. A memorial service will begin in the sanctuary at 11:00am following the visitation.
Born in Ludlow, KY on May 5, 1926 to Murray and Angela McNathy Humphreys, he became a lifelong resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Immediately upon graduation from Biloxi High School, Jack joined the U.S. Navy and left for boot camp on June 6, 1944 (D-Day) and was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended Ole Miss in 1950 and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing and merchandising and eventually returned to Biloxi to open his own business, Gulf Coast Window Cleaning Company. Jack married Jane Young Crowder of Biloxi, and they had four children. Jack credits Jane's help and guidance for creating a wonderful and successful life.
Jack was an avid boatman and fisherman maximizing his time on the water. Back in the day, he and Jane participated in the annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeos and won numerous trophies and prizes. They shared the love of the gulf and owned several boats. He marveled at Jane's ability to navigate the gulf on her own and take the boat out to the islands and beyond as she desired.
They were members of the Biloxi Yacht Club, Gulf Coast Carnival Association, Mithras, and Les Masques. He loved being President of Mithras in 1982 where he enjoyed the planning, organizing, and directing of the pageant. Jack was also a past King of both Mithras and Les Masques.
In 1989 he became a partner of a Chandelier Island fishing guide business which had a stationary, permanent houseboat at Chandelier Island named "The Pelican". His partner was Captain Mark Stebly of Ocean Springs. Mark had a great influence on honing Jack's angler skills.
After Jane's departure he married Harriet McIntyre in 1991. Harriet and her husband, "Jug" McIntyre (deceased), were old friends of Jack and Jane's and shared many happy memories together on the coast, in Jackson, and at Ole Miss football games. While not traveling, Jack and Harriet spent their time living in both Jackson and Ocean Springs.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife Harriet Humphreys, sons Michael Humphreys (Anita) of Ocean Springs and Patrick Humphreys of Long Beach, CA; daughters Breanne Humphreys of Sacramento, CA and Wendy Humphreys Green (James), of Ocean Springs; step-daughters Leslie McIntyre Dukes Stanfield (Gordon) of Gulfport and V.V. McIntyre Selman (Jeff) of Jackson; and stepson, Ed McIntyre III (Rosa) of Brandon.
