She also volunteered in the city she loved, giving historic walking tours of the French Quarter and Cabildo. Upon moving to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, she became an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Gulfport Women's Club. She believed in family and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Kay was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Robert Louis Appel. She is survived by her three sons; Steven M. Appel of Hot Springs, AR; Kurt T. Appel (Claudia) of Gulfport, MS; Eddie C. Appel (Julie) of Gulfport, MS; and her daughter, Anna Lisa Latino (Steven) of Mandeville, LA.

She has nine grandchildren: Meg, Olivia, and Blake Appel; Morgan, Melanie and Madeline Appel; Steven, Kay Lee, and Christian Latino. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Anne Maher of Baton Rouge, LA and her many nieces and nephews who she dearly loved.

The family would like to thank Stefanie Stephens for her loving care, devotion and special friendship

Dear Cousins,
I am so sorry to hear about Kay. Ray and I are in Spain and could not come home. In a way, I am sort of writing for Aunt Edith. Mama always loved her two nieces and thought the world of them. Over the years, we didn't get together very often, but it was such fun to get together when we did. She was always happy to see us and us to see her. She was so sweet, loved her family, and loved LSU! I know she will be sadly missed by her family and friends We had a grand time when she and Bobby came to my house in Baton Rouge to meet with the Jablonowski cousins from Waco. What a crew! I am proud to call her my cousin!

Aunt Kay, thank you for being such a loving and compassionate person to me. My memories of you are forever embedded in my mind, especially during the Holidays . The traditions that we shared throughout my childhood grounded me and you always made them special. Thank you for comforting Me-Maw through the years, and for the wonderful role model that you set for my mom. Your kindness and caring personality will always live in my heart forever. Annalisa, Kurt, Eddie, Steve, and all the extended family, I hope that you are comforted in this time of mourning by the infinite Spirit of your mother and God to always hold her in your heart with peace, love, and happiness. Love, Erin Maher, neice of Kay
