This is extraordinarily late and I don't think anyone even remembers me, and I don't think anyone even cares; but I still have something I wish to say. In Vancleave I was the outcast girl, branded weird by all and bullied by the more popular kids, but Natalie she was different. Truthfully I never talked to her, but she was always happy and smiling and never ever cruel to the chosen few that were often targeted by the populars. I also recall the day that she was diagnosed, or rather the school learning of it. A few of her friends were crying, talking in barely audible whispers. And then when we wore orange and the news came to report, but the impact of it all never really affected me seeing as I was not close to her and how young I was. But, the waves of such a disaster hit much, much later. When my mother called me to tell me of Natalie's passing away, I was sitting in my friend's beat up truck as he was getting gas,the radio blaring. It was so...strange. Natalie was no longer in this world and here I was, breathing the sweet air of summer and on my way to a football game. And then, I started crying, just bawling like a baby out of the blue. Maybe it was the sad song on the radio, maybe it was just a long repressed mixture of things with that call being the last to set it off, whatever happened there was no stopping the tears. Now, I think of her every time with I'm my friends and that song inevitably comes on (it's on a cd). I think Natalie taught me something in her leaving this world, life is meant to be cherished and is something that is precious. I thank her for that, and even though she probably never even knew my last name I will certainly never forget her.
