Patrick Pierce Obituary

Dr. Patrick Louis Pierce

1935 ~ 2018

Long Beach

Dr. Patrick Louis Pierce, also affectionately known as "Trout King", passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 31.

Dr. Pierce was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas and graduated from Biloxi High School where he was voted Mr. Biloxi High. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi before getting his medical degree at the University of Tennessee Medical School at the early age of twenty-two. Dr. Pierce did his internship at Gorgas Hospital in the Canal Zone, Panama, where he met the love of his life, Martita. Pat lived a love-filled and adventurous life with Martita, from his Medical Air Force physician days in Turkey, to his residency in Ophthalmology at Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans, and finally landing in Long Beach, Mississippi. If he wasn't with his family or working at his Pierce Eye Clinic, Pat was either quail hunting or on the "Skip Jack II" with his many fishing and hunting buddies. Dr. Pierce had his Ophthalmology practice in Gulfport for 30 years. He was Chief of Staff at Memorial Hospital, and served on the board of the Mississippi Health Care Commission. He was a longtime member of the Gulfport Yacht Club and the Gulf Coast Carnival Association.

Pat was blessed with four daughters, Lisa Guyton (Jimmy), Sandra Boddie (George), Stella Wolf (David), and Vanessa Rodriguez (Jose), who cherish his kind heart and spirit, and as he would say, four sons-in-law that made up for having four girls. "Paw Paw" will always be in the hearts of his eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Alex Guyton, Jennifer Ruth Guyton, Nathan Boddie, Cliff Guyton, Sarah Boddie Robbins, Patrick Pierce Boddie, Daniel Wolf, Isabel Wolf, Victoria Wolf, Sebastian Rodriguez, Issac Rodriguez, Louis Pierce Guyton, and Lily Robbins , and he will be the first to meet his granddaughter Katherine Grace in heaven.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Vertice Pierce; his brother, Ed Pierce; and his granddaughter, Katherine Grace Wolf.

Visitation will be on Thursday, August 2, 2018, from 9:30 – 10:30 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 720 E Beach Blvd, Long Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am in the church.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Feed My Sheep, 2615 19th Street, Gulfport, MS 39501.

I am saddened to learn of the passing of my childhood friend, Pat. I have fond boyhood memories of the times I spent with Pat and Ed.

Dr. Pierce was my father's longtime, very best friend, and the times they spent together on the original Skip Jack and Skip Jack II were among my Dad's fondest memories. Pat and Martita were always loyal friends who could be counted on in the most difficult circumstances. I'm so sorry to learn of Dr. Pierce's passing, but I know that he is in a good place -- probably telling tall tales and limericks with my Dad and their friends who have passed on. No trip on the Skip Jack was complete without at least one new, original limerick designed to "taunt the Captain," and my Dad took great joy and pride in composing them for each trip. Aside from being the Trout King, Patrick was also supremely gifted as a quail hunter. My Dad often marveled at how he could routinely pick off 3 birds on a single covey rise -- with such panache that he made it look like child's play!
I grew up hearing and enjoying funny stories about Dr. Pierce, such as how he'd gleefully eat the ears off the girl's chocolate Easter Bunnies, much to their howls of consternation. The Pierce's definitely enriched our lives, and we are diminished for Dr. Pierce's passing. Martita and family, I send our most profound sympathy, and I know that my Dad treasured your friendship very highly. We wish you all the best in the years to come! Dr. Pierce and you all feature strongly in many, many happy, lifelong memories -- not just for me, but for your many friends and family.

Sincerely,
John H. Feamster III, formerly of Biloxi

Martita and Vanessa, we are so very sorry to hear about Patrick and so sorry that we were not able to attend the services yesterday. All of you have been a big part of our lives with our theater experiences. I look back on them often. Take care and God's peace.

Patrick was a fine member of the MHG Medical and Dental Staff for many years. He served his fellow Staff members well and faithfully in any role they elected him to fulfill, including Chief of Staff. As CEO, I knew I and our administrative team could count on his honest and complete input and advice in any situation. Patrick was pleasant even when situations were stressful, even-handed, thoughtful of different aspects of issues, prompt in his care of patients, loyal to his family and friends and supportive of the role of MHG in the community. Well done, and now rest in peace, Patrick.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Piece's passing. Sending my condolences to all the family.
Knew him in the 70's when I practiced dentistry in Gulfport and fished Chandeleur in those days. Our boats berthed on the same pier in the Gulfport Harbor.
One time while wade fishing a shark got hold of my foot. I made my way to the Skipjack where he, Ed, and Dr. Hamilton took good care of me, bandaging it up well until I got in to Gulfport Memorial Hospital ER.
Yes, I never saw him when he wasn't smiling and happy.
