Peter Scianna Obituary

Peter James Scianna

December 10, 1957 - October 2, 2012

Bay St. Louis, MS

Peter James Scianna, 54, of Bay St. Louis, MS, passed away Oct. 2, 2012, at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans after a long, courageous battle with the complications of diabetes. He was surrounded by family members.

Peter was a lifelong resident of Bay St. Louis and member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was one of nine children born to Charles and Beverly Scianna. Peter and his twin brother, Paul, were born in Gulfport on Dec. 10, 1957, making for a family of five boys. Four sisters would follow.

A graduate of Bay St. Louis High School, Peter attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he wowed faculty members with his writing skills. His creative genius subsequently was recognized by DC Comics when it published Peter's "Dragon Knights" in the inaugural issue of its "New Talent Showcase" comic book. He spent most of his professional career in retail management, including positions with Dixie Video and Blockbuster.

Throughout his life, Peter was known for his sharp wit and ability to instantaneously recall facts and information. He played a mean game of Scrabble, and you never wanted to be on the opposing team of any game involving trivia—especially about movies or books. But most of all, he will be remembered for his love of family. Nieces and nephews could count on Uncle Peter to be at the center of their fun time, and all who knew him can readily share their own "Peter story."

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles C. & Beverly Ann Favre Scianna.

Peter is survived by loving and caring siblings and their spouses, Charles C. Scianna, Jr. & Rita of Bellville, TX; Stephen Scianna & Paula of Magnolia, TX; Kenneth Scianna & Vicki of Tomball, TX; his twin brother, Paul Scianna & Paige of Kansas City, MO; Mary Ann Benvenutti & Mike of Bay St. Louis, MS; Danita Luttrell & Joey of Bay St. Louis, MS; Linda Scianna VanHoose & Bill of Hoschton, GA; and Julie Scianna-Timberlake & Harvey of Bay St. Louis, MS; his nieces & nephews, Ashley (Jeff) Arora, Stephanie Scianna, Steve Scianna, Jr., Courtney Scianna, Chad (Paige) Polk, Holly (Brad) Kennedy, Shawn Scianna, Blair Scianna, Drew (Michelle) Scianna, Becky Scianna, Anna Scianna, Laurie Benvenutti, Bailey Luttrell, Charlie Luttrell, Jonathan VanHoose, Samantha VanHoose, Olivia VanHoose and Jackson Timberlake. He also is survived by 8 great nieces & nephews, numerous Godchildren, aunts, uncles and friends.

Visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis. The Procession will leave the Funeral Home at 11:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St. Louis. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Bay St. Louis.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations in Peter's name to the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi and the American Red Cross.

Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis, MS is in charge of arrangements.

Peter, please give all our loved ones up in Heaven a great big hug and a kiss for us. I can see Beverly and Ursula drinking coffee (and probably smoking a cigarette too) and Charlie and Dominic having a conversation about fishing as I write this note. You was and always will be like a little brother to me, well, younger brother since you were much taller than me, but who wasn't.

Two of my favorite memories since Katrina was you knocking at my door and you giving us a tour of your beautiful home. You may be gone from the earth but will always and forever be in our minds and our hearts. Love ya!
