I am so sorry to hear of Roy's death. He was many things, as noted elsewhere, but as for me, he was the best Board of Trustees member that Memorial Hospital could have hoped for. Not many people today know the pivotal role Roy played in building MHG into a true regional center for the ill, the injured and the poor right along with the insured. And he worked diligently towards improving the range and quality of care at MHG, so that people could receive what they needed right at home and not in some distant city. Roy was appointed by both the City of Gulfport and the Harrison County Board of Supervisors over several decades to be their, and by extension the taxpayers', representative to insure the wise use of precious financial and human resources, and I was there to witness that he did exactly that, never wavering from the job he was asked to take on in behalf of the people as a whole. I had the greatest respect for his wisdom, intellect and vision as a leader. I deeply appreciated his help and his guidance, and when I needed it, his rebuke. He never gave out praise nor complaint without a good reason, he always attended to his public duty,he pressed people and causes that needed it, he negotiated with a glint in his eye and with a fair mind and he always kept his eye on the prize. Roy was just the best, one a few who one will ever meet in a lifetime, and I am glad I did. I am thankful to say I knew him, that he was my boss and that much of what I needed to do in my role would likely not have happened without Roy Newman and other Trustees, some of whom he recruited himself. God bless you, Roy, and your family and friends. We are all the better because of you, my friend.
