Wilburt H. Geddes, 80, of Pass Christian, died Wednesday January 18, 2006 in Gulfport. Mr. Geddes was a resident of Pass Christian since 1978. He worked as a scientist for the Naval Oceanographic Office for 36 years, serving as head of Project Magnet and the Acoustic Division, prior to being appointed Director of the Naval Oceanographic Office at Stennis in 1978. Following his retirement in 1983, he worked for Planning Systems Inc. and later founded Geddes Geophysical Inc. Mr. Geddes received numerous awards and medals for his pioneering work in Geophysics and Oceanography, including the Antarctic Service Medal.
Mr. Geddes was a member of the Church of Christ in Long Beach. He served as an elder of the church and participated in missions to Honduras and Panama.
Mr. Geddes was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Jewell C. Geddes.
Survivors include his wife, Margi Geddes of Pass Christian, 2 daughters, Tina Geddes of Long Beach and Janet Fulton and her husband Gary of Exton, PA, 3 sons, Norman Geddes and his wife Marsha of Cumming, GA, Gary Geddes and his wife Julie of Austin, TX, and Glenn Geddes and his wife Dianne of Fairhope, AL, 1 sister, Carol Newman and her husband Keith of Greenville, NC, 4 brothers Roland Geddes of Tappahannock, VA, Max Geddes of Winchester, VA, Kenny Geddes of Pinehurst, NC, and Philip Geddes of Decatur AL, 7 grandchildren, Shon, David, Steven, Lacey, Kevin, Ben and Jessica and 5 great grandchildren Jordan, Julie, Anna, Andrew and Ben.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, O'Neal Road, in Gulfport, where friends may visit one hour before the service. The family prefers memorials may be made to Church of Christ Long Beach, 200 N. Cleveland Avenue, Long Beach. MS 39560.
