William Emoty Stroup
December 9, 1927 - July 15, 2021
Long Beach, Mississippi - William E "Bill" Stroup, CW04, CEC, USN Ret., received his last transfer at the age of 93 on Thursday, July 15, 2021.
He enlisted in the Navy upon graduating from Williamsport High School and Technical Institute in Pennsylvania. In his 30 years of service with the Naval Construction Force (SeaBees), he was assigned duties from the Arctic to the Antarctic with a few arduous assignments and numerous family- oriented duty stations in between. Upon retiring from the Navy, Bill made Long Beach his primary residence. He then entered the private sector as operations manager for several projects with an international engineering company. Among his numerous advancements, achievements and awards for military service and accomplishments, Bill received three distinct honors, the most coveted civilian and military pistol award in 1965, the Distinguished Pistol Medal. In 2007 an Antarctic Mountain peak was named after him, Stroup Peak, located longitude 77% 06'12' S latitude 162%37'00"E. From the WAHS Alumni Education Foundation, he received the annual Distinguished Alumni in the professional category in 2016.
He was preceded in death his brothers, Thomas B Frantz, Curtis F Stroup; and sisters, Phyllis H Frantz and Katherine J Stroup May.
Bill was born in Williamsport, PA to Charles E. and Lucretia F. Stroup on December 9, 1927. He was married to Norma Grace Finning Stroup, formerly from Trinidad, West Indies. In addition to Grace, he is survived by their three children, Don and his wife Cindy of Quincy, MA, Robert Stroup of Long Beach and Elizabeth Stroup of Linden; his grandchildren, Derek Stroup, Sharon (Bubba) Lessard, and Lincoln Lessard all from Massachusetts; his sisters, Charlotte I Shrepple and Mary K Kuhns of Williamsport.
The Graveside Service with full Military Honors will take place at the Biloxi National Cemetery on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at 12:30 PM. A celebration of Bill's life will follow at the VFW Post 3937 located at 213 Klondyke Road, Long Beach, MS from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
