Robert Hudson Obituary

Robert (Bob) L. Hudson, age 93 passed away April 13, 2021 in Seal Beach, CA. He had been a resident of California since 1959 and made his home in Seal Beach since 1973.

Robert Leroy Hudson was born June 9, 1927 in Talleyrand, Iowa, the son of Leroy and Vera M. (Young) Abraham. Vera later married Cecil Hudson and the family moved to Iowa City where Robert graduated from City High in 1944. He joined the Army in 1945, including one year stationed in Japan. Returning to Iowa, he graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Civil Engineering. Robert then married and moved to Danville, IL, designed and built the family home and worked for General Motors eight years before moving to California in 1959.

He worked for Riverside Steel Fabrication in Santa Fe Springs as production manager until his retirement at age 55. He then became an entrepreneur designing, building and selling a condominium complex in downtown Long Beach and making numerous investments in real estate.

Robert enjoyed racing midget cars as a young adult. He was an avid golfer and beach runner. During his service in Japan, he learned to fly and revived his interest in aviation in the 1980's. He enjoyed flying his own planes and traveled around the U.S. Being an engineer, he designed his own style airplane and built it. He also traveled extensively overseas.

Robert lived life on his own terms and was always learning, reading and bettering himself. He also had a sensitive side and was charitable and helpful to many. He enjoyed the easy going beach lifestyle in Seal Beach.

He is survived by his children Sherry Grable (Wayne Hartwig), Solon, IA; Terry (Ramonne) Hudson, Davie, FL; Robert (Mary) Hudson, Fairfax, IA; and Jim Hudson, Iowa City, IA. Later in life he had a son Ryan Hudson. He is also survived by four grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brother Dan Hudson, Iowa City, IA; sister Donna Mattes, Tiffin, IA. For the past year Robert was assisted and cared for by Alfred (Freddie) Monteon, who became a good friend, along with Jenny Rach and Don Thompson.
