I first met Andy when I was asked by my employer, The Culinary Institute of America, to represent the CIA at the Florida Restaurant Association Education Foundation annual meeting in January of 2003. As a fellow CIA alum, Andy greeted me with such warmth and friendship that I quickly overcame my fear of not knowing anyone at this meeting! In December of 2001, I had been at the Greenbrier Resort for a West Virginia Hospitality Association meeting and I had the good fortune to be seated next to Michael Hurst. Mike delivered his speech to the group of food service educators with humor and passion and I never forgot his words. It seemed like a logical progression for me to have met Mike and now to have the opportunity to share this memorable experience with his son. In the past few years, Andy and I communicated through e-mail and caught up with each other at Restaurant Association events. I will always remember him for his passion to giving back to aspiring culinary arts students. I am now in my second year of teaching culinary arts to high school students and it is my goal to provide my students with the same incredible support Andy gave his family, friends and the food service industry. My memories of Andy will always hold a special place in my heart. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I have just recently learned of Andy’s passing. He was a great friend. Andy and I were early friends from the neighborhood way back in the late 70’s & 80’s. He was my closet friend for over 10 years. We were two kids hanging out and playing in the canals and going to Sunrise ice skating center. Some of my fondest memories were waking up early to go fishing, hanging out in the club house built inside his parent’s garage, and preparing sautéed mushrooms for a snack. I think we both knew we had the culinary bug way back then, because what 10 year olds do you know cook sautéed mushrooms for fun? Andy and his father both influenced me greatly in my career choice. I am fortunate enough to own several restaurants in New Jersey. A week does not go by that I do not think or tell somebody about my past experiences with Andy or Mike. They were both tremendous leaders and truly passionate about their choices in life. I will miss Andy and the visits we had every time I came down to Fort Lauderdale. The memories that we shared shaped my life and I will never forget him.

Andy and I first met during summer session at Penn State University. He quickly become one of my best friends and we remained close throughout college. Unfortunately, we drifted apart after graduation, but I thought of him frequently. Andy was a wonderful friend and a lot of fun to be with. His warmth and enthusiasm was contagious and his friendship was special. I wish his family my sincerest condolences.

Dear Hurst Family,

What a shock it was to hear of Andy's passing. I was a server at the Fisheries and a student in Mike's F.I.U. class.

I remember Andy as the cute little boy I served milk to at his daddy's restaurant. Whenever your family came into dinner you could just sense the adoration you all had for one another.

In class Mike used to tell tales of his wonderfully fun loving family. I worked with many of Andy's brothers and sisters. They adored him. May the strength I viewed in this family continue to pervail during this most difficult time.

Fondly, Christine Nelson Barkett

I sit here writing this as Andy’s prayer service is taking place in Plantation. I’m not sure what is worse, to have been able to attend the service or being here unable to attend. My sentiments are the same, in either case, total sadness. It doesn’t matter how long it has been since you’ve worked at the Fisheries, once a part of the Fisheries family, always a part of the Fisheries family. I worked with Andy when he was a food runner and then when he was old enough to finally become a server. What a fun kid! Andy, much like his father, made an impression on everyone he came in contact with. I was always happy when we were paired as partners because I knew I was in for a fun night. I am thankful that I had the privilege of knowing two great Hurst men whom I am sure are now reunited.

Hearing of his family’s loss today was shocking news. My heartfelt condolences go out to all of the Hurst family members and to the Fisheries staff, which I am quite sure, will never be the same without Andy at the helm. Special thoughts and prayers are with you Elli, God bless you, your Mom and all of your siblings.

April 20, 2006

Our deepest sympathy to the Hurst family, the Fisheries family and Victoria at this very difficult time. Andy was a sweet, generous and wonderful person who will be missed so much.

From my youth with Elli & Ellen, to working at the Fish for many years, to chats, email, business endeavors, and conversations about my brother's, friend's & father's death, Andy & I had a connection for many years. We reflected on life & the future, as he was almost like a younger brother in some ways.

This is such a sad and profound loss to all those who had the pleasure to know Andy, just like when we lost his dad Mike.

Those of us who have been touched and inspired by knowing them both are so very lucky !

Your life was much too short, so let this be a lesson to us all how meaningful and important one person can be to so many others without even knowing it.

God Bless You & Your Family

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Hurst Family. Andy was a great friend. His ability to make you laugh was one of his greatest attributes. Going fishing, football Saturdays, crawfish parties, Jimmy Buffett concerts are all great memories that will be cherished forever. I was fortunate enough to meet Andy six years ago through a few mutual friends. From afar you could see the tight bond that they shared, I admired that. A Wise Man once told me "You are who you hang out with" and with that thought, I remember saying, I would be honored to be his friend. He brought a sparkle to every eye and put a smile on every face. With his kindness and quick wit, you could always be sure that time spent with Andy was time well spent.

To his circle of friends, Andy may now always be that missing link in their circle. Don't worry Andy, your friends won't let you down.

They will always keep the circle strong. They will hold all hands together and hold them high.

All hands along with the Lord, will always carry You, your Memory, and your Honor

April 19, 2006

Here I sit at Heritage Park, looking at the hill where Andy set up the slip-and-slide...I can almost see him stirring the pot. It has been a few years since I've seen Andy, but I still remember our conversation. I told him I still "talked" to his Dad, that I knew he wasn't my Dad, but I still missed him and felt like I grew up with him too...Andy said, "Yeah I know, I am always asking...Dad, what would you do in this situation?" He had such big shoes to fill and he wanted to do it right. I did "grow up" at the Fish, starting in high school as a breadgirl, then moving on to waitressing and college...we all went to Mr. Hurst for advice about our future, advice about college and careers. He wrote the best letters of recommendation and he wanted everyone to succeed.

Even my wedding was a Fisheries event. That's where Kip and I met, and after years of working together, we tied the knot. Andy made it my dream wedding. He brought about 300 pounds of crawfish to Key Largo for an amazing boil in the sun. He called it "The Moveable Feast." He gave us the honor of "notching the stick" that stirs the pot...notch number five, that's us. To top it all off he made us THE MOST AMAZING coconut key lime cheesecake. I didn't know wedding cakes were his specialty. I just asked for a coconut key lime cheesecake. I said I didn't care what it looked like...it could be a sheet cake, a bunch of little cakes...whatever...as long as it was a coconut key lime cheesecake. OH MY, was I surprised when he presents us with this beautiful triple tiered work of art. It was truly the best cake we've ever had. Andy said people that weren't even at the wedding heard about it and were requesting it for their special event.

Andy was even at my babyshower. He and RJ showered us with gifts...yep, that's right, the two of them went shopping for baby stuff. It was so sweet, they said they had to have a beer to get themselves into the store...but once they were in, they shopped like crazy - toys, bottles, ear thermometer, etc...even the card was great. I was so touched!

On Friday, April 14th my family was having a crawfish boil and we were reminiscing (as we do every time we have boil) about our wedding and what a great job Andy, Scott, RJ and Chris did...and how..because of them my whole family is hooked on mud bugs.

The next day we got the call

JB concerts, crawfish, keylime cheesecake, and our anniversary will never be the same...They will forever be accompanied by bitter sweet memories....
We love you Andy...It's been a lovely cruise....I'll keep on "talking" with you and your Dad...

God Bless you and your family,
Sabrina and Kip

The good times we had with Andy are too many to count. I will miss Andy each day. My heart goes out to his family, my support will always be here.

6 years ago, Andy started talking to me one night at Falcon Pub, out of the blue. We hit it off and he welcomed me into his group of friends, which are now some of my closest. Andy made friends wherever he went and I feel honored for having been one of them. I will miss him dearly.

Andy was to present a scholarship to a South Plantation senior on Wed. April 26. We are still going to give the scholarship in his name. He was excited when I spoke with him last week about being this year's Distinguished Alumni who would present the scholarship to a senior pursuing the field of Culinary Arts. I remember him coming to demonstrate to the cooking classes at South. He had great spirit and energy. All of us at South Plantation will miss him.

Dear Hurst Family,

I would like to express my deepest sympathies for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Andy at "The Fish" for ten years. I was a breadgirl while he was a food runner... and we were in college at about the same time. I even had a crush on him for a bit. I remember getting up the nerve to ask him to attend a dance with me. He didn't go - I was rejected! I also remember how I would try to buy "burrito supremes" from Taco Bell before work because he loved them. Isn't that funny? A great guy with his culinary skill yet he could really go for a burrito supreme. Andy was great. What a loss for your family. Perhaps the food is lousy up in heaven and Mr. Hurst needed some help, or just some great company. Love to you all, Charlotte Liljestrand Nagy and the Nagy family, Chris, Caitlin, & Kristin
