Today marks five years since God took you home. The shock of your death remains as raw today as it did then. I have learned that the more one loves the harder they grieve. You were my rock and I miss you more and more. Forever loved, never forgotten. Your loving wife Arlene.

Arlene,
This message and photo is for you. I met your husband in 1975 at a World Book Achievement conference. I took this photo of him during his presentation. I worked part-time for World Book from 1975-1978. While I was not in his Branch, I enjoyed competing with his sales personnel in Chicago. He was an impressive man and over the past 28 years I have occasionally remembered my World Book years. I just celebrated 42 year of marriage in December and can only imagine the loss you still feel. I hope that this message brings you comfort. Calvin was a fellow world booker and a inspiration to many people. You were blessed to share your life with him.

May God continue to comfort your heart and mind.

I was wondering today why I had not seen my friend Calvin Paris in awhile. I searched the internet for contact information and discovered this sad news. Calvin was a gentleman with a brilliant mind and he was quite an amazing guy. I miss him, and my heart goes out to the family he left behind.

Happy Birthday Cal, I am lighting a candle for you today with a heavy heart. My present to you is for me to find peace without you. Evenings and weekends are horrible, the quiet here is deafening. I am told that it gets easier with time. I miss you, and I love you.

Last August a group of friends from Washington, D.C. ventured to the Vineyard for vacation. As we were congregating outside of the Oak Bluffs' Postal Station, we ran into a delightful man who was sitting on a bench directly outside. He immediately engaged in a conversation with us. He was happy to share stories of the Vineyard and the reason why he sat at that particular bench (in memoriam to his late wife). He then implored us to stop by his house for a few beers before we returned back to the District.

We took Mr. Paris up on his offer. A few days later we knocked on his door and he gladly welcomed us into his home. He told us of his time as a successful salesman, his days at Howard University, and the history of Martha's Vineyard. We vividly remember how visibly emotional he got when speaking about his dear friend from Howard who he recently visited.

The brief time we spent with Mr. Paris was the highlight our trip. As young black professionals, we felt as though Mr. Paris was gifting us the experience of the Vineyard. We took pictures of that visit and mailed him the pictures and a note thanking him for sharing Martha's Vineyard with us. We wanted to let him know how grateful we were for his legacy and that we would keep the tradition going. Unfortunately, the letter never made it because we did not realize that we need to send it to a PO Box.

On our trip back to the Vineyard this week, we were determined to say hello to our friend, Mr. Paris. We sadly learned that our new tradition of Inkwell sunbathing, porch party gatherings, and black excellence socializing would be without our Mr. Paris. Thank you for showing us that this Island still has room for us to build new and lasting memories. Adam, Brandon, Jeremy, Latonya, and Tycely
