Darrin Greck Obituary

Greck, Darrin Lewis, 49, of Davie, FL, formerly of North Miami Beach, FL, passed away Friday, March 12, 2010. Darrin was born on December 20, 1960, in Hollywood, FL, adored son of Melvin Lee and June Greck. Darrin was the beloved husband of Linda Ann, and loving father of Jordan Ryan and Corey Alan. Darrin was the devoted brother of Adrienne (Marc) Plotkin, Harvey and Todd (Rhonda) Greck and brother-in-law of Katie Marlow (Billy Fajardo) and Dr. Susan H. Zobler. Darrin was the son-in-law of Dr. Melvyn N. Zobler and Natalie Reed. He was a caring uncle to nephews and nieces, Mickey and Kevin Plotkin, Branden Greck and Jessica Schaffer, Justin, Ryan and Ashley Greck. Darrin graduated from North Miami Beach (NMB) Senior High in 1978, as a proud member of the school's Debate Team. He proceeded to earn his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of South Florida in 1982, where he also served as a member of Student Government. Upon graduation, Darrin joined his father at the family business, Dolphin Gas Systems, and worked to learn the business from entry level. Starting out with his own delivery route and gas installations, Darrin continued to learn every aspect of the business. Darrin's leadership and vision successfully expanded the realm of the business from propane delivery, sales, and field service to include sales and service of gas appliances, barbecues, installation, piping and repair services, creating the one-stop, full-service propane company Dolphin Gas is known as today. Over his 28 years together in business with his father, Darrin earned his position as President of Dolphin Gas and the respect of his family, friends, colleagues and customers. His leadership skills were also dedicated to the Florida Propane Gas Industry, where Darrin served as President (2004). He also served as a member of the Board of Directors and former President of the South Florida Gas Institute. Darrin is recognized as one of the industry's most dynamic and energetic professionals. Darrin and his wife, Linda, grew up in the same NMB neighborhood and knew each other since Junior High and High School. They married in 1988. Darrin was a devoted family man and father. He was an avid golfer and a loyal, lifelong fan of the Miami Dolphins. Darrin loved and lived life to the fullest, and brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. Funeral services will be held Monday (today), March 15, 3 p.m., at Levitt-Weinstein Beth David Memorial Gardens, 3201 N.W. 72nd Ave., Hollywood, FL. Shiva following services. Dear Linda and Family. I just learned of Darrin's passing today. I had not spoken to Darrin in a very long time. He called me several months ago to see if I was attending our high school reunion. We talked as if no time had passed. I will always remember Darrin and the times we spent together growing up. I am so sorry for your loss.

Linda, When my Dad called me I recognized the concerned tone in his voice but never could have guessed the sad news he was about to tell me. I have a picture of your Mom and my Dad
and each time I look at it I see my
cousin Linda staring back at me through your Mom's eye's. Nobody can come close to feeling the way you and the boys must feel. Saying I'm sorry seems excruciatingly inadequate. I am glad that you and Darrin were blessed with 2 wonderful boys and I'm sure that as you look into their eyes you will see their father looking back at you just as I see you when I look at my Aunt Joy.

Love, Your Cousin David

What a guy. No one will ever replace the energy that was Darrin. Betty and I enjoyed many dinner double dates with Linda where we laughed until we cried. Birthdays and celebrations were always filled with his special sense of humor. So many Sunday morning bike rides were shared over the last couple of years. Each of us pausing to remember the week that was. Ending with encouraging words to get us through the weeks that lie ahead. How could I have known that our best ride would be our last ride. Until we ride together again, I will miss you and fondly remember our years together.

The entire Greck family....

We are deeply saddened by your loss. My wife Lisa's and my family go back with you over 40+ years. From the days growing up in skylake, winning little league championships together (Todd, Darrin, & my brother Rich) on Mister Donut & Sub Center (with Harvey & Mel coaching us).

Visiting Mel & June in the west endzone at Dolphins games. It was a ritual.

Through high school to our high school reunion.

Darrin touched everyone he came in contact with. He was well liked, admired, and respected by his friends and peers. Just like his father Mel.

We were lucky to have Darrin be apart of or life. We will miss you Darrin, but never forget you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

TO LINDA, JORDAN, COREY, TRIXY AND THE ENTIRE GRECK FAMILY::::::::

DARRIN-------
You have soared with the eagles, and flown like a bird
When you landed on your perch
Your voice was always heard
Now is your time to fold those wings
Which lifted you above others like no one has ever seen
You and Mel are flying high in the sky with one another
For its our time to live YOUR LEGACY with each other...

Linda, Jordan and Corey- may you know that Darrin was a special breed. He was a pure bred-stallion. Irreplaceable and one of a kind in the stable.
He was a winner....a hero in my book...and a friend of mine yesterday, today, tomorrow, and forever.

I love you guys...

Darrin and I were TEP fraternity brothers at USF over 28 years ago and lost contact after graduation. Despite the span of time since seeing Darrin, a clear picture of his warm and friendly smile are still etched in my mind. I am saddened by his very premature passing and I wish the blessing that his family will be comforted by G-d in this most painful time and that they have only joyful and happy occasions to celebrate in the future.

To our “cool” boss man,

As we sit here today completing our normal routine, there is an enormous emptiness in our hearts and at Dolphin Gas. We miss our “Buenos Dias,” “The evil eye,” “the high five’s,” “the whistling” announcing your arrival, the jokes, the unfinished jokes, the honesty and the “I’m not mean, I’m just honest,” we just miss the “BEST BOSS WE WILL EVER HAVE.” He was more than a boss, he was our friend, somebody we could talk to and confide in and be ourselves. The only person, besides Linda, that was able to get us through the obstacles during the day. We will always miss you, your warm smile, your loud music, the classic rock, your animated friends, your exceptional personality and for making the office a “fun workplace” and making our days brighter and enjoyable.

XOXO

As the saying goes, "God takes the good ones young." Darrin, I will miss your non-stop smiling face and positive attitude about life in general! Even when riding our school bus as a young teenager, you'd come on board with a smile in spite of it being so early the birds weren't awake yet. I thank you for all of the ...time & effort you put into our high-school reunions for the class of '78! I thank you for being a great husband for Linda & a wonderful brother for my pal Todd. I'm thankful that I have yet another angel smiling down upon me from heaven. I've asked God to give you special blessings, my dear friend, today and everyday. xxxooo Tracy Horvath Bazon

To The Greck Family,
Darrin and I were only acquaintances from high school that first day we bumped into each other at Fontana Hall in USF. From then on we became more than buddies, he joined TEP and I became a little sister of the fraternity. We shared many trials and tribulations that first year of college. We always stayed in touch, and I will always have fond memories of sitting in Dolphin Gas with Darrin and his parents just shooting the breeze. Darrin was always there for me and even became a wonderful friend to my husband, Ysaac. Darrin we will miss you.May your family find comfort in knowing what a unique and special person you were.

I began as a customer of Darrins and became a friend. He was such a dynamic person and this year when my heater broke during the coldest days ever in Miami he gave me his heater from the store so my Mom and I could defrost a little.
We would talk Dolphins and Hurricanes each time I would go by the shop. My thoughts and prayers are with his wonderful family. I will never forget Darrin.

Darrin, not too long you and I spoke about the special bond that all of us from North Miami Beach class of 1978 had. You always had a huge smile on your face whenever you saw one of us, and whenever we spoke about others of us. You told me that we should have reunions more frequently than once every ten years, and I told you that if we did that, not as many people would attend. Judging by the hundreds upon hundreds of people that attended your service today, I was wrong. You are clearly a special force that brought everybody together, in life and in death. Kenny B and Larry D, you spoke beautifully on behalf of all of Darrin’s friends. Thank you both. Darrin, know that we will always have a huge smile on our faces whenever we think of you and talk about you, which we will always do. Class of 1978, let’s all give an extra hearty hello to each other whenever we see each other. Linda, Jordan, Corey, and Todd, and the rest of the family, you are in our thoughts and prayers. Go NMB Chargers and Dolphins!

Yesterday was one of the saddest days of my life. I helped to bury one of my oldest and best friends.

I have cried. I have reflected on our lives together. As kids growing up, as men. My friend was always there. Constant.

My friend was full of life and energy, loving us all and sharing himself with us freely.

He knew that life was an "E" ticket. That you might as well enjoy it, because it was what it was.

That we were all connected. Different packages of shared energy. Brothers. Sisters.

That a smile cost nothing, but the return on it was priceless.

I shoveled a little dirt on his casket. Helped return him to the earth. To the ether. Blessed him with my tears.

I will always miss him. I will always love him.

Goodbye, my friend, Darrin.

March 15, 2010

I was stunned to learn of Darrin's passing. I have known him since we were on the Mister Donut little league baseball team in 1972. I remember his father taking us out on his boat after we won that little league title. There was, of course, a barbecue that day and much laughter. We were also on the debate team together at NMB. More good times. Always good times.

After high school, we would speak from time to time and afterwards I always remarked to myself that Darrin was truly a person of great kindness, one who truly loved his family and friends. Although we spoke infrequently, he was always a friend, someone I was proud to have known.

I attended the services today and his friends all spoke so eloquently about him. Clearly, we were all enriched by having known this kind and joyful man. My wife and I wish Linda, their children, his brothers and family our deepest sympathies.

To Linda, and your children, your father was my first friend ever, when my family moved to NMB in 1969, (41 years). There is not enough room to share all the great times I shared with your father, (and his family), growing up just a few blocks away. It has been many years, (too long), but as I sit here, all that I can do is smile, and remember all the adventures that two freinds can share till they went their own ways after High School. To Linda, your husband was my FIRST, and BEST freind. That was not a mistake, as his influence on my life as a young man, made me what I am today. All the adventures that we went on as children; rest in my mind as if it was yesterday. I am sure that you have experianced your own adventures with Darrin over the years; marriage, children, and your freindship & love. To his children; I want you to know how special your father was. My life as a young man was spending almost everyday with your father at school, at the breakfast table with with your Grandmother June yelling about the Dolphins, spending Sundays at South Beach with your Grandfather, playing softball, playing Golf at Greynolds Park before the sun came up, (as we would ride our bikes lugging our clubs), Dolphin games in the end zone during their "glory years, Bar Mitzphas, fishing off the bridge by his parents house, getting up at 8am on Saturdays, and getting together a Football game with all our freinds, (Kenny B, Mitchell O, Robert G, Jeff E, Ian S, Marshell O, Robert K, Cory R, and of course your uncle Todd) And of course Dusty Rhoads; The "American Dream". Todd, it has been many years, and my friendship, with you, and your brother brings a smile to my face. To June, my deepest sympathy at this time. your son was my friend, and always will be. Thank you for bringing him into my life. Darrin, my "little buddy",as it has been many years, thank you, and I truly miss you. Your friend for life Ira "Boots".

A long-time customer of Darrin's when we lived in Davie for 10 years, he would go out of his way to help us. March 14, 2010

On Friday, we lost a friend, brother, a father, an uncle, a son, a husband. He was a person who touched people all around him and lit up their lives with his presence and huge heart. Although small in stature, in many ways, he was larger than life. He had a way of crossing through various dynamics and be able to include you in his extended family and/or networks of friends and always make you feel a part of them. He had a way of making you feel better for knowing him. Everyone thinks they can relate Kevin Bacon and the 6 degrees of separation, but I have a feeling he had nothing on Darrin. Whether you called him Darrin, DG or Midget, you were glad to have been his acquaintance and more importantly his friend. One marveled at his ability to mesh people who ordinarily probably would have never even have met one another.

I had known Darrin for almost 25 years. I feel fortunate to have had a good friend for half my life.

I know many of us are stunned, shocked and trying to come to grips with losing someone who at 49 was so full of life that it is almost inconceivable that he could be gone. I received the news and could not find the words. As I type this, I still find it hard to believe he’s not going to be there for all of us.

Unfortunately, I have been where Corey and Jordan are now. I too lost my father and grandfather within 6 months of one another back when I was almost 8 years old. Thankfully, they will have many people ready to come forward to do what is necessary to help out. I think to a man (or woman), the way Darrin touched all our lives, we are all ready to help Linda with whatever she needs.

I guess Goose and Darrin are on the front nine. Just don’t put a wedge in Goose’s hands.

Vaya con Dios, mi amigo / mi hermano.

May G-d bless you and keep you, May G-d make his face shine upon you and be gracious onto you and May G-d lift up his face onto you and grant you peace.

My Friendship with Darrin spans from being children to raising them.
There was the School Patrol, Bar Mitzvahs, skipping classes to find parts for our cars at the junk yard, road trips to Tampa and Gainesville, singles dances from the “J” to being my Best Man and on and on.
We take for granted the people who flow through our lives until they are gone.
Even though we did not see each other that often, it was not because we did not care.
Take this opportunity to reach out to your old and new friends to let them know how much they mean to you.
Linda, Jordan and Cory, I wish you strength and peace.

Rest in peace my friend,

Richard

Rest in Peace and now you can play 18 with Goose. You always had a smile and a story. My BBQ will never be the same. GP
