David Gable Obituary

GABLE, David, longtime Hollywood resident, made his mark on South Florida and passed peacefully October 16 at the age of 96. Brave soldier, prolific developer/general contractor, beloved husband, father and grandfather. Lived his life as described in his high school yearbook (Thomas Jefferson High School, Brooklyn, Class of 1936): "A football player who doesn't play the grandstand." Born February 7, 1918 on a farm in Parsippany, New Jersey, youngest of eight children of Max and Anna. Enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January, 1942. Decorated for bravery for his service as a Waist Gunner during multiple missions aboard B-17 "Flying Fortress" bombers, but always insisted that the real heroes are the ones who never came home. Flew in the D-Day invasion of occupied Europe, and saw duty in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Returned to New York and married his sweetheart Janet. They were married nearly 69 years. Also survived by daughter Phyllis Dolinsky (Jerome), son Michael Gable (Barbara), and grandchildren Robert Dolinsky and Jaclyn Dolinsky. Platted and constructed the Country Club Homes and Fleetwood Manor Subdivisions in Hollywood. Recognized by the City of Hollywood in 1995 as a "Pioneer Representative" in commemoration of the city's 70th anniversary. Built the first condominium apartments in Hallandale in 1962 (Eldorado Country Club), and together with his attorney at the time, helped write the original Florida laws governing condominiums. Served on the grievance committee of the Florida Homebuilders Association and helped set higher standards for the building industry. Scrupulously honest and fair with numerous subcontractors, employees and customers. "Better than to know the Torah is to live it- to be righteous." He was. Services Sunday, October 19, 10:00 a.m., Temple Beth El, 1351 S. 14th Avenue, Hollywood, with internment following at Mount Nebo Cemetery, 5505 NW 3rd Street, Miami.

Truly a man who lived life to the fullest and with the moral turpitude that we should all try to emulate. He will never be forgotten.

For as long as I have known Dave I always felt it was an honor to be in his presence and a part of his family.

Came to South Florida to attend the wedding Phyliss Gable in 1971 at the home of David and Janet and their son and daughter. Stayed in Miami ever since. The photo shows what a handsome and sophisticated gentleman he was. My heart goes out to Janey, Phyliss and Michael.

I was privileged to live on the same street, in Hollywood, as David & Janet. As well as being a member of the same Temple/Synagogue, that David & Janet belong to. At all times was David a mensch. He will be sorely missed.
