Evangeline Commeau Obituary

"Vangie" was born Evangeline Harriett Commeau to Jean Baptiste and Emily Haché Commeau on 01/12/1921, the youngest of their five children (Stan, Margaret, Clayton, Bob, and Vangie); remarkably, she lived 101 years - until 10/02/2022. Vangie and her siblings grew up on the banks of the Stillwater River in Orono, Maine, with her father's children (Raymond, Ida, John Jr, and Della) and her mother's children (Thomas and Mabel). Although Vangie lost the guiding hand of her mother when she was only thirteen and the Great Depression was well underway, she managed to graduate from Orono High School with the class of 1939. Earliest jobs were at Bath Iron Works and as a telephone operator at Maine Public Service Company in Presque Isle, Maine. In 1963 she moved to Florida and began a truly independent life with a career at Miami Dade Jr. College (Now Miami Dade College). She worked there until her retirement in 1986. After retirement Vangie pursued many interests. She painted in oils and gave several shows of her paintings. She wrote and published two books about her life experiences, The Child Called Nanoot and Just Spinning my Yarn. She stayed in touch with many friends and her family of nieces and nephews: Judith Commeau, Allen Commeau, Janice Miller, Robert Commeau, Joyce Cote, Paul Commeau, Tucker Grant, Pamela Chenea, Martha Grant and Frank Grant. Her nephew Richard Grant saw her first book through to publication just before he died. She enjoyed her OLPH Lunch Bunch and maintained her independence with the help of special friends Margie Plunkett and Nancy Clark. Her favorite sayings sum up Vangie's life; "I am what I am and that's all I am" and "To thine own self be true." A memorial mass will be held at St. David Catholic Church, 3900 South University Drive, Davie, Florida on October 24 at 10:00 in the morning. To read more please visit www.tmralph.com..
