George Button Obituary

George C. Button, also known to much of Fort Lauderdale as Doctor Button, passed away in his home on March 2 surrounded by family after a long, difficult battle with prostate cancer. He was 81 years old and left us way too early. He was born in Cleveland, OH. He grew up in Toronto, Ohio, a small town on the Ohio River. He was one of six siblings. He went to Kent State University and then went on to medical school at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico without knowing a word of Spanish. Upon graduating he moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1972 with his family to set up shop and begin his career as a Doctor of Family Medicine. He got a job working for another physician then not too shortly after he acquired an existing practice from a retiring physician, staff included. He practiced in several locations, the longest and most recent of which was the former Taco Viva on Federal Highway which he converted to a medical office. It was there he practiced for 28 years and loved every minute of it. He was a one in a million Doctor. Ask anyone. For the last 24 years he had the honor of befriending and caring for a large and extended Royal Family overseas which literally took him around the world several times. Life was an adventure for George and he lived it well. Over the years he had the privilege to work with many of Fort Lauderdale's finest Primary Care and Specialty doctors. He considered them not only to be close colleagues but also life long friends. The respect was always mutual. On a personal level he had so many close friends and neighbors that he had known for decades. Those relationships were near and dear to his heart. He was a compassionate Family Physician, a staunch Republican, a favorite uncle and cousin, a loyal and caring brother, an adoring and doting grandfather, a proud, generous and loving father, and a kind, generous and loving husband. He was loved by many and will be missed by all. He touched so many lives for the better. To honor his wishes there will be no services or memorials. George was a strong supporter of The South Florida Wildlife Center. In lieu of flowers you may consider a donation to this organization or a charity of your choice. Good bye George, we love you.

Always Remembered ......Never Forgotten

Hello Dr. Buttons, (as I always referred to you) After all this time, I still remember you as a wonderful, caring dr. You not only took care of me, you took great care of my daughters Joanna, Jessica and Jackii, and Howard also.
Had it not been for you, I might not be here today. You just about forced me to go and get a Mamo. I went and it was discovered I had not one, but two cancerous tumors. I had the surgery, & I have been in remission for six years. Glad I listened to you. Thank you.

I keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Perhaps you have found Jackii by now. Please take care of her and also my grandson Vinny who we lost almost 3 years ago. He gets nose bleeds just like his mom, Joanna. I'm sure you'll take good care of that too.

Love you Dr. Buttons, until next time.

Well Dr. B, I was right about one thing for sure! I will never find a doctor, that could come close to taking your place . That's just on the medical end. As for you, the human being. Well there was only one of you. Your understanding kindness, and your ability to make a patient laugh, when they are sick. Is priceless. You have a heart of gold and a sincere kindness, that will never go unremembered. You were and will always be, the best of the best. Thank you for keeping me healthy all those yrs. Thanks for my life. I miss you, so very much. God bless you, and I know he does. You did his work ! Always, Valerie Enlund

Dr. Button was a wonderful person as a doctor and as a man. George was a doctor who clearly put the health and well-being of his patients before anything else. He was instantly likable. That's why he had so many friends and admirers. He is and will always be missed.

George taught me many things in my life for which I'm grateful, not the least of which was how to make an amazing bloody mary from scratch. He gave me my two other sisters, Laura and Beth, whom I love dearly. And later he gave me Mel and Jeff. And Montana. And so much more. To quote my three-year old brother, "I love Jotch. I reeeeaaaallly do."

Button family: deepest condolences from Victor, Marla, Andrea & Jeffrey Krupman. I, Andrea, have fond memories of recent visits w/George & Maureen when my husband Joe and I lived in Florida. George was the essence of a laid back kinda guy - seems like nothing rattled him. He just wanted to make sure all those around him were having a good time. And if you were around George ... it was a given that you'd be smiling.

Today we lost a treasured friend
a well-respected man of men.
He was the hero of the hood,'
The one who always understood
Those frantic phone calls in the night
to see if we would be alright.
The afterhours office trips
to diagnose, or give a stitch.
We took for granted he would know
What to do and where to go.
We always knew we could depend
On the doctor who was first our friend.

A Patriot, so proud and true
His list of friends reads like who's-who.'
And once you'd made it to the list,
no matter how much time you'd missed
between a visit or a call
it seemed no time had passed at all.

His name and reputation grew,
And so around the world he flew.
His skill and knowledge in demand;
You'd swear he practiced sleight of hand!
Home one minute; gone the next!
His passport was a travel text
Of patient visits far and wide
And yet he took it all in stride.

A finer doctor you'll not find,
Revered by all he left behind.
He lived his life in his own way
Without regrets? Well, who's to say.
I only know one thing for sure,
It will take time to find a cure
To fill the emptiness we feel
That love and memories will heal.

Know if he could, he would prescribe
we carry on and live our lives.
From up above he'll check our charts
To try and mend our heavy hearts
And though it's hard to say farewell
He wouldn't want for us to dwell.
Let's just be grateful, as we should,
George was the Hero of the Hood.

Dear Maureen and family,

Dr. Button was like no other doctor. He always gave me, my father Cal, and the rest of our family such compassionate care. It is hard to find doctor's of this nature. I feel fortunate to have met such a wonderful physician and man. I pray for peace in your family, as he will be truly missed.
Love and prayers, the Howe and Harris family.

My dear Maureen and family,
How very dear George was to me and my children. Our years together go back to the early 70's, sharing many home parties, and he was always there when my children needed his care in emergencies. We will miss his charm, dry wit and caring. May he now rest in peace. Sending our prayers of comfort and sympathies to you and the children. With love, Marion, Sean, Stacie and Todd.

To the Button Clan:
Monte and I met George in the 70's and he actually introduced me to my husband, Monte (who he called "famous"). He was a special friend, and outstanding physician who cared so much for his patients more than anyone we have every met. Such a wonderful smile and always positive in every way. We have a plethora of memories. What a wonderful collection of family and friends he leaves as his legacy. Our heart goes out for you, his family in dealing with this void in your lives. George will be with you forever, as he will us as long as we are on this earth. Such a special friendship.
Our love and prayers for the family, and especially Maureen! Monte(famous) and Gail

I first met Dr Buttons (as I referred to him, although I know there was no "s" on his last name, he understood me)back in about 1984. He was our one and only family physician up until the time he stopped practicing. We all fell he was the Dr Welby of days gone by. Always taking time to listen to all of our problems regardless of how busy his office was. Anytime I would call his office, he would always reply to my calls. There will never be another 'Dr. Buttons' for anyone in our family. A true gentleman and a wonderful doctor. May God's light shine brightly on you. Rest in Peace Dr. Buttons, give my regards to Jackii.
