Jack Satter Obituary

SATTER, Jack, age 92, died peacefully in Dedham, MA on April 7, 2014. He was the beloved son of the late Rose and Benjamin Satter. Jack was born and raised in Boston, attended the Frank V. Thompson Junior High School and graduated from English High School. He served in Europe during World War II as a Sergeant in the Medical Corps. A hard worker since youth when he sold newspapers and served as a movie usher. A modern American success story, he began his career at Colonial Provision Company as a truck helper. He quickly rose through the ranks to driver, salesman, sales manager and vice president, eventually becoming the owner in 1970. His vision and innovation introduced "Fenway Franks" and "Yankee Franks" hot dogs to Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium and to markets throughout New England, New York and New Jersey. As the sole owner of Colonial Provision Company on Massachusetts Avenue in his hometown, Mr. Satter's vision led to a modernized plant with state-of-the-art equipment. He was known for his intelligence, his drive and attention to detail, innovative processing and delivery methods. He sold Colonial in 1983. Jack had an avid interest in sports, especially baseball, which he shared with his father. Mr. Satter's enthusiasm blossomed in 1978 when he became a limited partner with the New York Yankee organization for more than 27 years. He was very proud of the team and his many subsequent championship rings. Jack was a dedicated philanthropist, donating to synagogues in Newton, where he resided for many years, the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged (now Hebrew SeniorLife), which named its assisted care facility in Revere, "The Jack Satter House", and NewBridge on the Charles, where the Jack Satter Assisted Living Residences and the Jack Satter Cottages bear his name. Massachusetts General Hospital was a special interest to Mr. Satter. He was an involved benefactor in establishing the Jack Satter Cardiac Intensive Care Floor and the Jack Satter Mezzanine and Conference Center. He continuously took an interest in the medical institution, admiring their skill and concern for the well-being of their patients. The father of three, he is survived by his sister Eleanor Bayne, daughter Lorrie Cooney, son Michael and daughter-in-law Marjie, four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Joel, sister Phyllis, son Donald and grandson David. He was an uncle and friend to so many. At the time of his death, Mr. Satter resided at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham. Services will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 10:30AM at Congregation Mishkan Tefila, 300 Hammond Pond Parkway, Chestnut Hill, MA. Following burial, a reception will be held at Congregation Mishkan Tefila until 6:00PM. Donations in his memory can be made to Massachusetts General Hospital or Hebrew SeniorLife.

Dear Family, My Mom spoke very highly of Mr. Satter. She worked at Colonial many years ago for her brother-in-law, Louis Isaccs. Many years later when I lost my son at age 7,I ran a function to raise money for Reyes Syndrome. Mr. Satter was kind enough to donate food for my function. I will never forget his generousity. May he rest in peace. My sincere sympathy to all that were close to him.

I am sorry to hear of Jack passing away. He was a very kind man. Jack was going to look into a problem at the JSH that I wrote him about. Just bad luck that he passed away before being able to correct this error. Hopefully the next generation of the Satter family will be as kind, thoughtful, and caring as Jack was. I know that he is in heaven now doing much good up there. My condolences to all his loved ones. Billy Bell
