James Birr Obituary

Birr, James Otto, August 22, 1916 - June 8, 2006. James Otto Birr passed away Thursday, June 8, 2006, in Naples, Florida, at the age of 89. His life was filled with athletics, business pursuits, politics, community service, and most importantly his beloved family. He was a college All-American football and basketball athlete for Indiana University and was selected to play in the Chicago Tribune All-Star football game after his senior year. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1938 and also formed the "Jim Birr All Stars" pro basketball team that played the Harlem Globetrotters, New York Celtics, and other professional teams throughout the country. In WWII he served as a lieutenant aboard the USS Belleau Wood aircraft carrier where he received the Bronze Star for his heroic actions and a Purple Heart. Sports Illustrated and basketball historian Dick Vitale recognized him as one of the first one-handed shooters. He was a Mayoral candidate of Indianapolis, established the New York Titans AFL football team, created and published the magazine "Movie Digest", participated in the development and was part owner of the Daytona International Speedway, managed thoroughbred race horses, and was a real estate developer in South Florida. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years and "angel from heaven" Virginia, three sons (James, Stephen, Jeffrey), three daughters-in-law, four grandsons and three granddaughters. He is remembered as a good man who loved and is loved by his family more than words could ever express. Fuller Funeral Home Naples, FL 34109 239-592-1611.
