Jeffrey Scott Caron M.D. obituary

Jeffrey Caron Obituary

Caron, M.D., Jeffrey Scott, 44, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes in his Ft. Lauderdale home on Sunday, March 6, 2011. Jeff was born in the old Knox Hospital in Rockland, Maine on March 14, 1966, son of Louis and Sandra (Richards) Caron. He grew up in Thomaston and displayed early the initiative that would characterize his life. He was the youngest, at 10 years old, Courier Gazette paperboy, growing a route that he inherited from 18 to 45 customers, enabling him to purchase his own bike. He was also the leader of the "Elm Street Gang," spearheading many an epic game of hide and seek or "SPUD" with the neighborhood kids. Jeff completed his K-12 education in Thomaston schools, graduating as Salutatorian of the Georges Valley High School, class of 1984. During high school, Jeff was equally well liked and respected by teachers and peers; he connected with everyone regardless of title or social group. He had an insatiable curiosity and would not stop asking questions until he had an answer that satisfied him. His science fair entries were always ambitious; as a ninth grader, his nuclear power project took third place at the Maine State Science Fair. While in high school, Jeff ran Cross-Country and served as a Sports Photographer for the Courier Gazette. He was the yearbook photo editor, played drums in the band, and took pride in revitalizing the Student Council. Jeff was selected as the GVHS Hugh O'Brien (HOBY) Award winner as a sophomore, elected to Dirigo Boys' State as a junior, and received the Daughters of the American Revolution Award as a senior, each recognizing his significant community service. Jeff became a junior firefighter before he had his driver's license, arriving at many a call with his mother in the passenger's seat. He later completed his Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training, becoming the youngest EMT on the crew and the only member who needed to leave class for ambulance calls in the middle of the school day; he often went directly to the scene, arriving in advance of the ambulance and crew. He was also a Special Police Officer for the Thomaston Police Department, completing his training at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. A long time Boy Scout, Jeff earned that group's highest honor, the Eagle Scout award, during his sophomore year. He worked as a Boy Scout camp counselor at Camp William Hinds in Raymond for several summers. After missing the Thomaston Fourth of July celebration one of these summers, he vowed never to do so again, becoming one of "Peter's Pyros," setting up and lighting the annual fireworks celebration each year through college and medical school. He rarely missed a Thomaston Fourth of July no matter where he relocated. Upon graduating high school, Jeff first matriculated to Bates College, majoring in Biology. While at Bates, he helped form the popular band "Dorm Damage", and was a Resident Assistant his two final years. He also spent a term studying the Costa Rican rain forest. His hometown was never far away, however, and he frequently returned home on the weekends, working as a dispatcher for Thomaston Emergency Services and as clerk in the Emergency Department at Pen Bay Medical Center. Jeff entered medical school after graduating from Bates, enrolling in the University of Vermont, College of Medicine, from which he graduated in 1993. He completed a one year emergency medical residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, FL and later a two year family medicine residency in Memphis, TN. Upon relocating to Ft. Lauderdale, he initially worked in the ER of a local hospital, however he missed the connection with his patients to which he had become accustomed during his family practice work. He joined a private practice, Las Olas, and later purchased the business, ultimately moving and renaming the practice Urgent Care of Wilton Manors. While he will be remembered for many things, his family will most cherish his incredible kindness and generosity. He sincerely believed that it was his calling to make others' lives better through his own and spent his life doing just that. Jeff is predeceased by his grandparents Joseph and Lois Richards of Thomaston and Oscar and Gloria Simmons of Rockland. Jeff is survived by his parents, Sandra (Richards) and Louis Caron of Thomaston; sister Michelle (Caron) Grant of Thomaston; brother Chris Caron of Warren; sister Heather (Caron) Van Buskirk and husband Scott of South Thomaston; special friend Brian Humphries of Ft. Lauderdale, who has adopted Jeff's beloved dogs Sara and Tony; aunts Joanne Richards of Thomaston, Peg Richards McGowan and husband Bob of Essex Junction, VT, Cindy Ducale and husband Gary of Hope, and Jackie Harjula of Thomaston; uncles Bill Richards and wife Anne Maria of Thomaston, Steven Richards and wife Karen of Warren; nieces Olivia and Grace Van Buskirk; nephews Chad Winslow and Tyler Grant; and a grand nephew Kael Aaron Winslow (born March 6, 2011). The family also has many memories of all the cousins playing together during holiday celebrations and summer vacations, they include, Michael, Kathy, Dan, Kevin, Mike, Brian, Lisa, Coty, Donny, Maria, Susie, and Jimmy. Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday, March 14, 2011 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, where a celebration of his life will be held, at 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 15, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Jeffrey Scott Caron, MD Memorial Scholarship Fund, C/O Camden National Bank, 188 Main Street, Thomaston, ME 04861. It´s been many years since I first walked into your office but I still miss you doc. I´ll never forget the time you stayed over because I was on my motorcycle in the rain. I called you and you said you´d wait as long as it takes and you did. I thought when I finally got there you might just write my prescription and get me out of there but no, you talked to me for over an hour. You were the best Dr Caron and I´m sure many of your patients still think about you like I do.

I remember the day I last saw him at his office. He had had a cough and he was putting a lozenge into his mouth. I was shocked to learn of his passing. When I related his passing to my gastroenterologist up in New Jersey, it struck a chord. He thought perhaps that he, himself, had not been paying enough attention to his own health. When I thought about Dr. Jeff, I thought that truly this was a doctor who put everyone else first!

I still see you in my thoughts when we spoke at my appointments. You educated me on many issues. I must say this, you were a very gifted man. I was pondering the other day regarding our conversation about men. I had said to you why couldn't I have met a man long ago that has some of my papa and some of you combined. Honestly, you three were the only men I never feared, like I did with others. You had said we're out there. You just have to know where to look. You also made me laugh. It was an honor to have been your patient. I applaud you and your grace.

Dr Caron, you were my primary care Doctor, but you treated me like a friend. You diagnosed my arthritis after I suffered in pain for months, only to get misdiagnosed by other doctors. You were a kind and caring man, I never felt rushed in the office. After I moved to Georgia, I flew to FLL to still get my checkups. I am sorry I heard about your death only after I called for an appointment. My thoughts and prayers with your family. You will be remember always for all the great things you did, and for the difference you made in many, many lives.

I had been a patient of Dr. Caron's for a few years. He was my primary doctor when I was diagnosed with a cancerous lump that he found during a check up. It is because of him my cancer was diagnosed early. I am forever thankful to him, he was a true hero. There is not a doubt in his patients that he was an amazing and loving doctor...but first and foremost he was a wonderful caring human being. My thoughts go out to his family.

To the family of Dr. Caron, our deepest sympathy to all of you. I just heard this terrible news today. Three generations of our family were Dr. Caron's patients. He was the BEST physician we have ever had. We too are from New England, and often spoke about the Northeast, he always looked forward to his visits there. As they say, "the good die young." No one will ever fill his shoes.

Wow....what a shock. Today as I consulted with a new patient, she informed me of the sudden passing of Dr Caron. My heart skipped a beat. Jeff was a true humanitarian. He stood in service to all others. He was a great man, and I shall miss him. Dr Keith Brickell (Brickell Chiropractic Center)

I still can't believe that Dr. Caron is no longer with us. I think about him and how he cared sooooo much for his patients as if they were all personal friends. I still talk about him to my family and friends, and the new doctor that I had to see for a checkup. I even told that doctor that my visit was nothing like I experienced at Dr. Caron's office. He asked me "why" and I told him because I felt rushed and not fully heard by him. He just shook his head a little. There was only 1 Dr. Caron and I will truly keep missing him!!!!!!!!!!!

I needed an interim doctor while vacationing in Florida. Having special needs, I could not find a doctor in the area that was willing to help me. I started to panic. That is, until I found Dr. Caron, who unlike any other doctor I have had, put such a high personel interest in my well being. This is a great loss and my condolences go out to his family and friends.

Doctor Caron saved my life last year when I visited him because I was having chest pains. I turned out that four arteries in my heart were 99% blocked, and I wound up having a quadruple bypass.

Honestly no other doctor I have ever visited could have talked me into going to the emergency room, but Dr. Caron took the time to really explain things and connect with me on a human level. I am a typical male who resists going to doctors, and Dr. Caron overcame that. I didn't know him well, but I owe him a huge amount. My sincere condolences to the Caron family.

Finding a doctor that in which you can entrust your life to is a difficult task for anyone. I was fortunate to have found that person in Jeff. A recent transplant from NJ when I needed a doctor I was referred to Jeff and today I mourn the loss of a truly wonderful man who after I read his obituary I stood in awe of his accomplishments, dedication to his family, and the people and vocation he loved so much.

My sincerest prayers and thoughts for you, your family and the many lives you have touched,

My heart is still heavy as the days go by from learning of the passing of Dr. Caron. I have spent many years under his loving care from the Las Olas office thru the Urgent Care practice. Many memorable office visits of one on one personal, meaningful conversation about our lives. It was this sharing that created the bond beyond a Doctor- Patient relationship. I will miss him, his beautiful presence and caring soul. I now cherish our visit the last week of February, putting my hand on his shoulder and telling him thank you as I left the Urgent Care office. What a beautiful, intelligent, loving man.
Dr. Caron, you have touched and impacted many of us in such a loving, compassionate way. We now take your precious gifts you gave so freely to us by knowing you and pass it on in our everyday interactions, keeping your spirit alive. Your time on earth is through… Gone too soon… Gone too soon……. Love you Dr. Caron.

I've never met another doctor like Dr Caron, he was our family dr for years and we were so excited when he moved his office to our neighborhood; even after he changed to urgent care we continued to rely on him for much of our care because we trusted him. A visit to him frequently included a story about his family or childhood and he felt more like a friend than just a doctor. A terrible loss to everyone.

We searched everywhere for a doctor with compassion and the background we could trust to understand her condition. Fibromyalgia is a difficult problem to find a physician for, as many many know. More than a practitioner, rather a friend
More than a doctor, a healer
More than a listener, he was a man that heard and cared in conversation
These were our impressions from knowing Dr. Caron
Talking with him about life and then reading his obituary make me feel honored to know such an extra-ordinary man.
We will truly miss him and are thankful the Lord brought him into our lives and filled such a short life with so much living, caring and giving.
