Jerome Sheldon Obituary

Beloved husband, father, and grandfather died suddenly when he was struck by a car on February 12, 2021. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 28, 1939, and graduated from Miami Beach Senior High in 1957. He attended the University of Florida and then graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1964. He was a radiologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach and a Professor of Radiology at the University of Miami School of Medicine for over 50 years. He was a trusted source of wisdom, strength, and support for family and friends on medical issues and in almost every other area. He was a true Renaissance Man whose lifetime love of learning inspired his family and friends to better themselves in ways we never thought possible. His quiet and humble approach to life was a shining example for us all to follow. He is survived by his wife Rita of 56 years; his children Daniel (Alissa), Paul, and Allen (Keri); and his grandchildren Samantha, Meredith, Dana, Cassidy, and Jenna. He will be sorely missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.

Our sincere condolences to Rita and the entire Sheldon Family. We first met Jerry and Rita in Breckenridge where we owned town homes across from each other. Jerry and Rita skied with us for more than 20 years. In Breckenridge we not only skied together but socialized with Jerry and Rita and and with their friends and family. We were close to the same age and we immediately bonded sharing our thoughts on all matters and establishing a lasting friendship. We both served on the Pines HOA board and grew to respect each other's talents and opinions. Jerry was such a personable man and I never hesitated to ask him for medical advice which he freely gave. We will always remember some of his sayings and medical remedys – such as “tincture of time”. We will miss our dear friend, Jerry Sheldon.

I was deeply sadden today when I received a text from a fellow coworker at Mount Sinai. I knew Dr. Sheldon the entire time i worked in radiology finally retiring after 46 years there. Dr. Sheldon was a kind, gentle man and always had the answer to any question you could challenge him with. His passing in such a manner was disturbing. My prayers are going out to his family. He is in a good place now.

Jerry was a great guy, we went to Beach High & played football together, he was always there for his friends. The world lost a great one.

My deepest condolences to Rita and the entire Family. I first met Jerry when I was a medical student at the U of Miami rotating through Radiology. Jerry was a terrific teacher. Much later we were both members of the Aesculapian Society and then we were both members of the Peacock Group of Physicians. My older brother went to Miami Beach High School with both Rita and Jerry and I attended Miami Beach High School several years behind Jerry. I recall that Jerry enjoyed woodworking, photography, working out, speed walking, fly fishing and he had a voracious appetite for reading and self learning. He was also on the Board of the U of Miami Medical School. Jerry will be missed by all that knew him. His living legacy is not only Rita and the extended family but all of us that he spent time with and taught us not only medicine but to be a decent and good person.

My deepest and sincere condolences to the Sheldon family. Know that Dr Sheldon had a very positive impact on my MRI career. I still share his many "pearls of wisdom" that he taught me as a young MRI tech. I'm deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Rest in Peace Dr. Sheldon.

I was shocked to hear of his unfortunate demise. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. I was his resident from 1996-2000. Dr Sheldon was an amazing teacher and human being. Very kindhearted and caring person. Had a great sense of humor and was very keen on teaching the fundamentals to residents. No wonder every year we had 2 or so residents taking up fellowships in Neuroradiology. Like Dr Ruskin I too cherish his CIBA copy and his notes during my graduation in Netter. Feel very blessed to have known and worked with him. Our thoughts and prayers to the Sheldon Family.

Jerry, as everybody at Mount Sinai Hospital and Childrens Hospital in South Miami knew Dr Sheldon, was, indeed, a one in a million person. As a neuroradiologist he was highly respected and looked for in difficult diagnoses. His career started with the challenging cerebral and vertebral angiography, then he practically taught himself the art of interpretation in the developing imaging CT and MRI modalities. Jerry was my professor and later I became a member of the radiology group, I knew him well. He was intelligent, calm, a deep thinker and evaluator and proud father and husband. I never saw Jerry angry.
Rita, may you and your children find the strength to overcome this tragedy and find solace remembering how much he was and how much he loved all of you.

I was distraught when I found out Jerry had passed away. Our relationship goes back to college and I have the highest respect for him as he was a wonderful person and icon in the field of neuroradiology. I have a copy of the Ciba publication with reference to the nervouis system published in 1983 and he was a contributor to this publication with Frank Netter. I always considered him to be a brilliant physician and he and his accomplishments will not be forgotten. Rita I will greatly miss him and regret not spending more time together in recent years
