John was my cousin and lived across and down the street from our house. My Dad, his Uncle Gordy, would drive us all to school every morning and we'd all walk home together at the end of the day. My earliest memories of John is him playing the piano. So very talented!!! He had my twin sister, Angela, me and his brothers Ed and Mike form a quartet and we practiced "Moon River". Not sure how talented we were as we never went public with our performance:-))) He also participated in the music program at the church we grew up in, St. Francis Xavier where we also went to school. I remember John and Pat getting married and him being director of music at Immaculate Heart of Mary on Plymouth Ave. in Grand Rapids. At one point, John and Pat visited my husband, Gary, and I when we lived at U of M Dearborn Campus around 1972/75(?). They came with their daughters, Dawn and Jen. They must've been 3 or 4 years old. They panicked when we ordered pizza for supper and heard Gary ask for green peppers on it. They thought he meant the spice, pepper - YUCK! was their retort! They were so adorable. The last time I saw John was at his mother's funeral. The one thing I remember him saying to me was, "Being a grandfather is the greatest blessing I could ever have!!!" He was beaming when he said that! I will always cherish my memories of John. So very sorry I could not attend his funeral. Know that I'm with you all in spirit and in prayer. May he rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon him. God bless you all!

I am very sorry for your loss. I will always remember the kindness he and Pat showed me by opening their home up to me for an entire summer as a teenager so I could spend it with my friends before I permanently moved to North Carolina. He had a wonderful smile and a kind heart. Heaven has definitely gained another angel by John going up to heaven. Hugs and love to the entire family.

I have no words. John, you were truly an amazing man with a heart that was unmatched. I remember from my earliest memories how excited I was each Thanksgiving to run down the street and watch you turn on the Christmas lights. When you asked me to be a part of your family and help you to decorate your home I felt truly honored. The countless hours I spent with you painting your roof, stringing lights, and setting up your magical garage is something that I will never forget. You treated me as family, never getting frustrated or angry and teaching me everything you knew. You took pride in your home and how it looked and you let me be a part of that. You truly cared about me and would ask about me even when I was away at school and I always knew I had a reason to return to 7th street when I would come home to visit. Pat, my heart goes out to you. I am speechless at this terrible news. My thoughts, prayers, and heart is with you and your family at this time. I will always remember the time that I spent with John and the love and care that he showed the community with his endless devotion and dedication to his favorite holiday. John, you will be missed.
