I met Joe Perry in 1977, while I was in my first year as a School Psychologist for the Hubbard School System. At that time, Dr. Perry was the School Psychologist for the Brookfield School System, which borders Hubbard. As is often the case, students would move to and from the Hubbard and Brookfield schools, and as Hubbard was providing County wide Special Education services, some Brookfield Students were enrolled in the Hubbard SE programs. Through monthly Countywide meeting, we became friends, and when Dr. Perry was promoted to Supervisor of the Trumbull County Psychologists, he contacted me and offered me a position with the Trumbull County School System, which I accepted. I left Hubbard City Schools and joined Dr. Perry at the Trumbull County Schools. After a few years, Dr. Perry accepted the offer to become the Psychologist Supervisor for the Cleveland Public School, and again offered me a position, which I accepted. We began commuting together, and our bond strengthened. While in Cleveland we began purchasing Cleveland Browns Seasons tickets, which were in the Dawg Pound of the old Cleveland Browns Stadium, and continued attending games together in the new and current stadium over a 30 year period.
Dr. Perry was not only an exceptional Psychologist, from whom, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge, he was also an excellent communicator, which made him a remarkable teacher. Dr. Perry was my Mentor, and I am indebted to him for improving my diagnostic as well as therapeutic clinical skills. When Dr. Perry moved to Fort Lauderdale Florida, our friendship continued, and I would stay with him every year for one to two weeks at his home in Florida. As, most of those who knew him, will recall, Dr. Perry was an avid collector of antiques, and especially antique clocks. His home was filled with these clocks, and one morning while I was staying, I got up early and as I looked to see what time it was. I noticed that every clock was stopped at a different time. On my annual trips to South Florida, he would also have me as a guest lecturer for his graduating Intern School Psychologists, at Barry University, in North Miami. He was loved by the graduate students that he taught and supervised at Barry University.
Thanks to Dr. Perry I eventually purchased a home in Florida, where I sit now as I am writing and recalling my many enjoyable experiences with him. He was the most gracious host, and whenever I had company visiting me in Florida, Joe would invite us for boat rides on his Sea Ray Boat, up and down the Intercoastal Waterway. I have traveled with him by boat from his home to Miami many times and also made a few trips with him in the annual Boat Regatta to Elliot Key in the Florida Keys.
Dr. Perry spent his summers in Akron, Ohio, and I have many fond memories of our social interactions in Ohio. These social events included an elaborate 4th of July/birthday parties at the home which he shared with his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Perry, on Turkey Foot Island, which included a spectacular fireworks display over the Lake. I also have very fond memories of Joe and his wife, Elizabeth who would take his guests for boat rides to various restaurants along the shores of Portage Lakes.
Dr. Perry was also a very well-known Psychologist, well respected amongst his professional peers, and I through him, I became acquainted with many very prominent and in some cases famous psychologists, such as B.F Skinner, Albert Ellis, and many others. Dr. Perry also presented at many National Conventions, and allowed me to accompany him, and also present along with him. These conventions included the American Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, the Midwest Psychological Symposium, and the Florida Association of School Psychologists, and others.

I am deeply sadden and devastated by this loss of a very close and dear friend. I will miss him, forever.

My condolences to the family and friends. He was a kind caring person to me. Joe wanted the best for all people he surrounded himself with. He was a great father who tried very hard to motivate to be the best in achieving what they wanted out of life. May he rest in peace.
