Lance Preston Obituary

Preston, Lance G. - We have lost a loving son, a big brother and father figure to Deryk, a loyal friend, and a role model to all who knew him. Lance was an inspiration to all his teammates at both Chaminade High School and Florida International University where he was elected as the team Captain during his four years on the gridiron. His football successes extended from the play field to all other aspects of his life: Lance graduated from FIU this year and obtained a position in his major - A Project Manager for MAAS Construction in South Florida. He was devoted to his mother and family. He leaves his mother, Ana; his little brother, Deryk; and countless friends, teammates, and relatives which his life has touched. He will be missed by all he knew. We love you Lance. Visitation Thursday, 3-7 PM at Panciera Memorial Home followed by a Funeral Mass, Thursday, 7:30 PM at Nativity Catholic Church; 5220 Johnson Street, Hollywood. In lieu of flowers, we have set up a memorial fund, in Lance's name: Please send all memorial funds to: Lance Preston Football Memorial Fund, make checks payable to: Lance Preston Football Memorial Fund/FIU Foundation, Attn: Dept of Athletics, 11200 SW 8th St., Pharmed Arena #272, Miami, FL 33196. Dear Annie,
What a tragedy this has been for both your family and ours and how many similarities have marked our respective sons' passing: they were both excellent young men, in the same age group; they were both Construction Management student/graduate and currently employed by the same company; they both left this world as a result of a motorcycle accident and only a little over a month apart. They also both left a younger brother; our son Danny is 19 this week and is in terrible pain from his brother's loss. Our most sincere condolences to you and your family. The news about your son just came too close to home for us. We immediately identified with you and your pain even in the midst of our suffering.
We would definitely welcome the opportunity to talk. Please call us.

My deepest condolences go out to you and your family during this difficult time. I had the pleasure of first meeting Lance in elementary school. He was a wonderful young man that always had such a genuine and inviting smile on his face. By being such a great person, he touched a lot of lives. And for that, he will never be forgotten.

As I sit here I keep asking myself "how or why" God would take Lance Preston from this earth. I just keep thinking "why"? For those of you that knew Lance, he was more then a friend, he was a brother, he was a protector, he was number 43, he was LP, he was funny, he was kind, he was a man's man, but most of all he was someone I could call a "true friend". I had maybe the funnest times of my life hanging out with Lance in college, and those times will be forever cherished. I knew Lance for six years of my life, and it really feels like I lost a family member, and that was how Lance Preston touched your life, he made you feel like family, and maybe thats why it is so hard for me to say goodbye. When I first heard Pat Tilman had died I was shocked because he was so tough, but when I heard Lance died today, I was and still am in truly utter denial, because I always believed Lance was invinceable. I always felt that when I was with him I couldn't be hurt, because he was there, and knew he had my back through thick and thin. I still remeber the first time I met Lance my freshmen year of college, he was a tough kid, who was a great football player, the type of person everyone wanted to hangout with. I have truly been blessed by God for the time I got to spend on this earth with Lance Preston, he may have been the best friend I ever had. "I will always remember you Lance if you are looking down from heaven, you may be gone but your legacy among your friends and family will never be forgoten." Today I lost a brother, and tommorow, and everyday after I will remember him.

I was given the honor to know Lance from the time he was a little boy. He was a beautiful child then. And grew to be special young man who had the world waiting for him in the palm of his hands. Unfortunately, I havent seen Lance for sometime, but was always aware of his successes and always remained very proud of him. He was charming, sweet, intelligent, athletic, and strong. He respected his family and friends dearly. Thats how I will always remember him. My heart goes out to his mom Annie, and younger brother (who looked up to his brother like a hero)Deryk. Parents should never have to deal with such a loss, mostly, ones as special as Lance. Learning the details of his tragic accident and death hit me very hard. It will take time for all of us to heal. More importantly, his family. He will truly be missed in our world. But we have two important things that come from this, one, we have beatiful memories left in our hearts of a life that has truly touched us. And two, that when it comes our time, there is a special angel up there, waiting for us...Lance Gordon Preston. We will miss you Lance...until we meet again.

Annie and Deryk,

Please know that we love you and will ALWAYS call you family. It was good to see that Lance was special to so many people not only us. I don't know what else to say, many things describe the way I feel:

Blessed- for having him be a part of me.

Honored- to watch him grow up.

Greatful- that he kept me linked to you.

Lucky- to have been the last one from this side to have spent time with him.

Cheated- that he was taken away from us all.

Disappointed- my kids didn't know him better.

I will always be here for you both.

Love,

Kimberly, Tyler and Kelsey

When I heard that Lance diedI cried my eyes out. I knew lance from my cousin tiaira and he was an amazing friends and person. Tiaira and Lance went out and I was really happy when I saw him because he always had something nice to say about everyone. I was soo upset when I was on myspace and I saw all of the myspace profiles that had something to do with lance and I cried soo hard. I am so upset that he has died and I send my best wishes to his mother and dear brother and they know that they have a huge family that loves them and that will never change. When I ask god why he took Lance away from us on earth I realixed that God needs another magnicifant angle up there with him and that Lance was the one. I send my best to his mother and brither

Words cannot express how sorry we are for the loss of Lance.

Lance was an amazing person. He was always so proud and devoted to you both. His love for his family couldn’t be denied; just talking about you made him smile.

We loved watching him play football. We had the pleasure of having him visit with John and the other players during summer breaks. We have many found memories of Lance.

Ana, you raised a wonderful, amazing, talented son. It was a pleasure and honor to know Lance.

Dear Deryk and Annie,

Although distance keeps us physically far apart there is not a day where I do not think of you guys. Both of you, along with Lance and Mike have all touched my life and I feel so priviledged to know you. I have so many fond memories of us all together during the holidays. Ill never forget the first time I met Lance. As we were saying our goodbyes he went in to kiss my cheek and I was so completely caught off guard I turned an eggplant color of purple, and then because of my reaction, he turned a shade of reddish/purple too. When thinking of that moment I cannot help but smile because Lance was the type of guy that made everyone smile.

I am so thankful to have had such a miraculously kind hearted and loving group of people in my life. Thank you for always treateing me like family although we are somewhat "strangely related". But thats the great thing about family, you dont need to share blood to have that type of connection.

I feel extremely fortunate and honored to have known Lance. I wish nothing but the best for you both and hope to see you soon so we can make more fond memories.

I love you and miss you and am here for both of you always.

I coached Deryk's basketball team this summer at the Y. In making arrangements for my own summer vacation, I needed someone to fill in for two weeks. I had met Lance briefly just one time before and could tell by looking at him that he was an athlete. Having nobody else to fill in for me, I turned to Lance. I really expected that someone his age would be either too busy or just too consumed in his own life to want to fill in. To my relief he quickly jumped at the opportunity to fill in. You could tell right away that he was a capable and inspiring young man. I never saw him after I returned from my vacation and never got the chance to thank him. From what I've heard and read here, it looks like he touched many lives in a positive way. I thank you, Lance, for your help and pray for you and your family. Annie and Deryk, know that our prayers are for you at this time.

I am deeply saddened at the loss of so vibrant and sparkling a young man. I experiecned the joy and pleasure of having Lance in my Freshman Experience class at FIU during his first year, and we enjoyed maintaining our occasional contact thereafter. Lance exuded a charm and confidence that is uncommon in one so young, and his demeanor and respect for those around him was always evident. He was fastidious at a time when personal appearance seemed unimportant to many. He was always well prepared for class, and seemed always willing to lead by example not only on the football field but in the classroom as well. I followed Lance's exploits on the football field, but was pleased particularly with his academic achivements, and his obvious dedication and love for his younger brother, Deryk.

Participating in a Division I athletic program while maintaining an excellent academic record and graduating in four years is a notable and worthy accomplishment in this day and age. Perhaps this reality is the true measure of the very extraordinary character and humanity that Lance possessed. He certainly touched very deeply all who were fortunate to know him.
